FOOTBALL WCU RB Nicholas Wishart Named SoCon Freshman of the Week Catamounts Host #8 Wofford on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 2 p.m. For Homecoming Nicholas Wishart, who was getting his first career start at running back due to an injury to senior Manny DeShauteurs, rushed for 128 yards on 18 carries (7.1 yards per attempt) to earn the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week honor, the league announced today. Wishart (Toronto, Ontario/Central Tech HS) also caught five passes for 47 yards, giving him 175 all-purpose yards in Western's 31-25 loss at 11 th-ranked Georgia Southern. Wishart gave the Catamounts an early 10-0 lead after he burst over right tackle and 59 yards later found paydirt. The 59-yard rush was the longest by a Catamount this season and was the longest by a Georgia Southern opponent for the season. Wishart was additionally the first Catamount to rush for 100 yard this season, and the first since DeShauteurs did it versus Chattanooga last season (a span of 10 games). Wishart was also just the second back to eclipse the 100-yard plateau this season versus GSU. The other was Vick King (147 yards) who plays for top-ranked McNeese State. Senior quarterback Brian Gaither and senior Rod Dunlap were SoCon honorable mention Player of the Week performers for their efforts on Saturday. Gaither (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor HS) set a school record with 35 completions and established career highs with 321 passing yards and 56 pass attempts. The 56 pass attempts was additionally just one shy of the school record. Gaither, who leads the SoCon in passing yards and total offense, added 29 rushing yards, giving him 350 yards of total offense, which is the 12th-best, single-game effort in WCU history. With his effort, Gaither moved up several spots in various categories in the WCU record book, moving to 8th on the WCU career passing yards list (3,989), to 7th on the WCU career completions list (31 9), to 9th on the WCU career total-offense list (4,086) and to 7th on the WCU career pass attempts list (590). Dunlap (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) led Western Carolina in tackles for the sixth consecutive game, producing a nine stops at Georgia Southern. One of his stops went for a loss, while he added a forced fumble, a quarterback hurry and an interception. With his tackle for loss, he now has 37 for his career, moving to 6th on the WCU all-time list, and a team-high 12 for the season. Dunlap's 1.29 TFLs per game this season ranks third in the SoCon, while his 8.0 tackles per game additionally ranks eighth in the league. Western Carolina will return to action Saturday (Oct. 18) versus #8 Wofford, making it three straight games for the Cats versus a nationally-ranked, top 15 team. The game will wrap up a week's worth of Homecoming activities with kickoff set for 2:00 pm. Western Carolina has won eight of its last 10 Homecoming games, including five straight.
