Base Camp Cullowhee: The 2003-04 theatre season at Western Carolina University will continue with a bonus production of the popular musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown opening Oct. 23 on the Western campus, with a special one-night-only performance in downtown Asheville on Nov. 1. The show is a joint production of Western's department of communication and theatre arts and department of music, and is directed by Dennis Jackson, who holds the Carolyn Plemmons Phillips and Ben R. Phillips Distinguished Professorship in Musical Theatre. "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," originally written by Clark Gesner and based on the popular comic strip by Charles Schultz, follows the events of a day in the life of Charlie Brown and his imaginative beagle, Snoopy. The show originally opened off-Broadway in 1967 and played 1,597 performances. A major Broadway production was undertaken in 1999, with much of the original score revised by Andrew Lippa, who is in residency at Western working with the cast and crew of the show. The cast features Brandon Berg as Charlie Brown, Daniel Rohrig as Snoopy, Jessica Howard as Sally, Allison Currie as Lucy, Alan Smeltz as Linus and Trevor Perry as Schroeder. Bradley Martin of Western's department of music is music director for the show. "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" will stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, through Saturday, Oct. 25, with a 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 25. All campus shows will be performed in Niggli Theatre, and seating is limited. Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $6 for students. For reservations, call (828) 227-7491. October 17-19 | Women In the Wilderness Backpacking Trip by luke butchart I WCnewsmagazine 2.0 Base Camp Cullowhee is hosting a "Women in the Wilderness" backpacking trip on October 17-19. The location and price of this trip will be determined as the date approaches. However, there is a limited number of spots for those interested, so you should sign up as soon as possible to secure a place. The location will be a wilderness area close to the WCU campus. Transportation and meals will be provided. Experienced guides will be on hand to help orientate participants with reading compasses and topographic maps. Bill Gaither Performing in "Let Freedom Ring" Tour Coming to Ramsey Center, October 3 1 Award-winning gospel musician Bill Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band, along with more than a dozen of Gaither's Homecoming Friends, will bring the "Let Freedom Ring" tour to Western Carolina University's Ramsey Regional Activity Center on Friday, Oct. 31. A winner of multiple Grammy and Dove awards, Gaither will lead a cavalcade of singers, musicians and comedians in a four-hour marathon of hand-clapping, foot-stomping music and laughter billed as "a spiritual celebration that lives on in the hearts and minds of the fans long after the final note is played." "The events of the past years have caused us to reflect on what is most important in our lives - faith, family and friends," said Gaither. "I invite everyone to join me and my Homecoming Friends for a musical extravaganza as we honor the past and celebrate the future." In more than 30 years as a composer, songwriter and producer, Gaither has received four Grammy Awards, 20 Dove Award, and the first gold record ever awarded for an inspirational album. Inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1982, he was recently honored by ASCAP as Christian Songwriter of the Century. Tickets are on sale now for the Oct. 31 performance at Western, which is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $34.75 for artist circle seats, and $19.75 for upper bowl seating. Discounts of $3 per ticket are available to senior citizens age 65 and older, children age 12 and younger, and groups of 20 or more.
