" WCU Has Three Southern Conference Athletes of the Month Brian Gaither (Football), Brandy Andersen (Women's Golf) and Caleb Bailey (Men's Cross Country) Spartanburg, S.C. — Catamounts Brian Gaither (football), Brandy Andersen (women'sgolf) and Caleb Bailey (men's cross country) headline a list of eight Student-athletes in the Southern Conference as the league announced today the Athletes of the Month for September. One athlete was chosen from each fall sport: football, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's golf. Gaither (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 22) for his performance versus •in a 28-21 win over The Citadel. The senior quarterback is off to an impressive start in 2003. He leads the Southern Conference in passing (210.6 ypg) and total offense (208.8), while ranking 17th in the nation in completions (18.4) and 20th in TD responsibility (13.6 ppg). Gaither has already eclipsed the 1 ,000-yard mark for the 2003 season, becoming just the third WCU quarterback to throw for over 1 ,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Mike Pusey (1976-79) and Ronnie Mixon (1980-82) are the other two. For the season, Gaither has completed 92 of 154 passes for 1 ,053 yards and nine touchdowns. Seven of his TD passes came on consecutive games, when he tied a WCU Whitmire Stadium record with four versus JC Smith, then throwing three in his Player of the Week performance versus The Citadel. In his final game of the month, at East Tennessee State, he completed a career-high 22 passes for 281 yards, which was only five yards shy of his career high. Andersen (Orlando, Fla./WiIIiam R. Boone HS) led the Catamounts in both of its tournaments for the month. First, at the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic, the sophomore finished in a tie for 16th overall with a two-round score of 152 (76-76). Then, at the Elon/Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate, the reigning SoCon Champion won her third medalist honor in her short career, leading the Cats to a team victory as well with a two-round score of 610. Her 148 is the fifth-best, two-round score in WCU history. Andersen, who fired a 71 on day one and a 77 in the second round, held off teammate and fellow Orlando product Bianca Melone for the title. Coming into the final hole, Andersen and Melone both trailed Maria Dunne (Bethune-Cookman) by one shot. However, Melone birdied the hole to tie for the lead and 10 minutes later, Andersen eagled the 18th to edge the two by one stroke. Bailey (Lwrenceville, Ga./Brookwood HS) was selected the men's cross country runner of the month. The senior finished third at the WCU Invitational with a lifetime-best 8K of 24:46, while fighting off an inner ear infection. He leads the SoCon 8K ranking list by 48 seconds. Bailey also won the UTC/Front Runner Invitational with a time of 14:58 for the 5K course. He finished 20 seconds ahead of the next collegiate runner. Other Athletes of the Month included Davidson's Kelly Fillnow (women's cross country), Georgia Southern's Aron Price (men's golf), UNC Greensboro's Randi Patterson (men's soccer), Chattanooga's Diana Jallo (women's soccer) and Davidson's Latisha Chapman (volleyball).
