  • April 18, 2001 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 15 r Catamount Sports Signees Lady Cat Tennis Signs Cotton Western Carolina's head women's tennis coach Jan Stubbs announced the signing of Krisim Cotton of Central. S.C. to a National Letter of Intent. Cotton has lettered on the varsity squad lor the past live seasons at D.W. Daniel High School. In the eighth grade. she was the number three singles player al D.W. Daniel. As a freshman and sophomore. Cot- ion was the number two singles and number one doubles player, while her junior and senior season she played at the number one singles and doubles posititon. She recorded an overall singles record of 64- 6 and a doubles record of 30-5. Cotton is a two-lime, all-region player and was named Region Player of the Year lor (he 1999 and 2000 seasons. She was also named a National High School Coaches Association All-American in 1999. Cotton additionally was a South Carolina Individual State Tournament Qualifcr for three seasons, placing third in 2000, ■ Cotton has been a ranked United States Tennis Association (USTA) player for seven years. In 2000, she was ranked 84lh in the southern standings and 685th in the national standings. Volleyball Signs Eble Head volleyball coach Michelle Hansen announced the signing of Trieia Eble, a middle blocker from Marietta, Ga. Eble played for Marietta High School in Marietta, Ga, where she was named all-state and all-county twice. She was also named to the honorable mention all- state team as a sophomore. Eble holds the Marietta High School individual season record for blocks (346) and kills (813) and led the team with a .348 hitting percentage during the 2000 season. She also holds the school's record for career kills (1,731), blocks (756), digs (1,157), and sevice aces (228). Eble led her team to the state finals in each of the past two seasons. She was V. a top five finalist for School Sports Magazine (ieorgia Plaj er of the > ear and a Wendy's High School Heisman Nominee Eble was named as the Marietta Dailj Journal Athlete of the Week. Marietta High School Student ol the Month, and to the Georgia High School Senior All-Star Team. The 6-2 middle blocker v\ as awarded two outstanding player awards, the Kcnncsaw University Bobbi Bailey Award and the Trieia Eble Outstanding Player Award. "We are excited that Trieia is our tallest stgnce since we took over the program in 1997." stated Hansen. "At 6-2 she is surprisingly quick and agile and bas great natural lateral movement." Eble is currently playing club volleyball for the Atlanta Juniors with whom she has played for the past six years. Although her main position is middle blocker, she has also been getting experience at the outside hitting positions. "We are very excited about the height and versatility lhat she will bring at the net." Golf, Lott Signs Cordes Western Carolina University's head women's golf coach Steve Lott announced the signing of Line Soeltoft Cordes of Brondcrslcv, Denmark to a National Letter of Intent. Cordes is a two-time member of the Danish National Team and one of the top five junior golfers in Denmark. In 2000, she was runner up in the Danish Junior Championships. Cordes also finished in the top ten in the Nordic Championships and in the top 25 in the European Championships. She was the highest finishing Dane in both of these events. "This is a great day for Lady Catamount Golf," said Coach Lott. "Not only is Line an accomplished golfer, she is a wonderful young lady with the drive and determination to be the best at everything she does. Foster (2-3) picked up the win, shutting out the Bucs over the final two and two thirds innings, giving up only one hit and striking out two. Schade earned his career-high five RBIs on the strength of two hits on three appearances. Minero was three- for-five, while Roper and Goldston each had two hits. The Bucs won the Saturday game 9-5 on the strength of a four-run ninth. Western scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on the strength of Alan Beck's 12th home run of the season. ETSU reliever Jackson Simmerly would force a ground out and pop out, however, to end the Catamount threat. Sophomore right-hander Seth Foster fell to 3-2 on the season, giving up eight hits and five runs while striking out four in six and a third innings pitched. Roper and Buchanan led the Western bats with two hits and an RBI each, while Beck picked up two walks and two runs in addition to his home run. Last week, Western traveled to Atlanta to take on Georgia State (16- 21) for a two-game set. They fell Tuesday, April 10, in the opening contest 4-3 but redeemed themselves with a 13-7 win on Wednesday. Buchanan led the way with a career- high five hits in the WCU win. Georgia State looked to sweep the series at the on-set, scoring a run in each of the first innings to take the early lead. The Cats would tie the game in the third as Roper was walked and doubled in by Buchanan. Buchanan was thrown out at the .plate to end the inning, but not before Goldston would score to even the 441 Bypass * Franklin, NC * 828-524-8567 —-— score. Western would then take the lead on the strength of a four-run fifth. Beck and Buchanan crossed the plate on a single by freshman Brian Sigmcm. Junior Matt Price then hit a two-run homer to give his squad a four-run advantage. They would put the game away for good in the ninth, scoring six runs to cushion their lead. Schade and Goldston both hit bases loaded, two-run singles, and Roper would notch a two-run double to account for the six Western tallies. Junior Jeff Skinner pitched two and a third innings of middle relief to pick up a win in his first decision of the year. In addition to Price, four WCU batters had multiple-hit games. Roper, Goldston, Price, and Schade each recorded two hits a piece. Price drove in three, while the other three had two RBIs a piece. Georgia State opened the series edging out Western 4-3 in a game dominated by both pitching staffs. GSU's Ronnie Robinson pitched a complete game, giving up only one earned run and striking out five. Meanwhile, Basner and Foster combined for eight strikeouts and only two earned runs. WCU led the game until the a two- run sixth by the Eagles knotted the game at three. In the eighth, however, Georgia State's Michael Nelson would come home on a Foster wild pitch for the game-winning run. Minero, Beck, and Roane all notched two hits, while Todd Roper had the lone RBI for the Catamounts on his only hit of the day. Next up for Western is a trip to Asheville to take on the Bulldogs of UNC A today at 3:00 p.m. The Cats will then travel to Furman this weekend for a critical three-game series. The Paladins are sitting at fifth place currently with an 11-9 mark in league play, only one full game below the fourth-place Catamounts in the Southern Conference.
