  • Fall 2000 Sports SOCCER WESTERN CAROLINIAN 5B WCU Women's Soccer on the Fast Track photo by Daniel Hooker Sophomore Forward Morgan Foresman by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor This is supposed to be a rebuilding year for WCU soccer. However, no construction tape will be found at Charles W. Schrader Soccer Field this year. Instead, 10 starters return as WCU soccer looks to build on the achievements of 1999. Head coach Debbie Hensley is confident. "We have excellent talent returning. This year's team will be successful." The inaugural season was a success. The Lady Catamounts finished with a 10-9-1 record. The team dominated several matches and at times showed a powerful offensive forte, outscoring opponents by a 49-35 margin. This year the attack could be even more threatening. Returning for the Lady Catamounts is 1999 Southern Conference freshman of the year, Nardia Moore. The sophomore midfielder will be looking to improve on her 15 goals and 8 assists. "Nardia is one of the top midfielders in the Southern Conference. She takes advantage of most finishing opportunities, and will create more this year," coach Hensley said. With no upperclass- men on the roster, experience is a question mark. Coach Hensley is not worried, though. "We have more returning starters than most teams. Our underclassmen have played most minutes of most games,"said Hensley. Western Carolina returns 11 other sophomores. Experience will be needed from Yasmine Morton, Stacy Mardis, Christel Kirkpatrick and Kelly Barker. Perhaps the biggest cause for Hensley's excitement is the infusion of speed into the program. All six of the incoming freshman figure to challenge for playing time. Hensley said, "The biggest difference will be in team speed and depth up front." The Lady Cats will look to spread the field and use wider, quicker attacks. Coach: Brad Northington photo by Daniel Hooker Sophomore Goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley challenge for striker positions. The flashy forwards will give a strong midfield more opportunities and hopefully put pressure on defenses. One player hoping the attack will also relieve pressure is returning goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley. The High Point, NC native allowed less then two goals on average in 1999 making 88 saves while earning six clean sheets. "Mandi was very consistent for us last year and she should continue that this year," Coach Hensley said. She will have competition from freshman Tina Weaver. The former West Henderson keeper has been impressive in practice. Western Carolina was picked seventh by Southern Conference coaches, but Hensley, much like last year, expects to surprise. "We should be improved, the team is full of competitors," she said. The schedule will present more challenges for the young program. A road date with nationally ranked Clemson awaits the Lady Cats, and the Southern Conference will be ready this time around. Preseason practice has gone smoothly and the Lady Cats are ready for new challenges. The Cats open up play with a five-game road trip, beginning this weekend at Coastal Carolina. The first home game is September 11 against Troy State. Hensley hopes fans will get behind the exciting young team. "Last year the student body gave us a real home-field advantage. Teams did not like playing here, the fans were enthusiastic and rowdy when needed," she said. If the team remains on the fast track, there should be plenty to cheer about in the 2000 season.
