  • Fall 2000 Sports MENS GOLF AND CROSS COUNTRY WESTERN CAROLINIAN 7B Catamount Golf will use 'Best Mix' in WCU History by Cory Habicht Staff Writer Look for the best men's golf team Western has seen in recent history this fall. "I'm really excited about mis season," head coach Johnny Wike said. "I think we have a better golf team and better players than we've ever had before." Last year's team improved to eighth in the Southern Conference last season after finishing eleventh the year before. Wike looks for that improving trend to continue this season. "We're going to be improved this year," he said. "We're going to ask ourselves to shoot par and be a top five team in every tournament we play." Five returning golfers from last year's team will fill the squad's experience gap. This group includes the team's lone senior Jason Sugg. Sugg's '99-'00 season was highlighted by a third place finish at the Radford Intercollegiate and his 78.24 career scoring average puts him seventh on WCU's all-time list. Returning juniors Greg Lewis and Lee Cline and sophomore Bryan Sangid will also bring experience from last year. Lewis, a walk-on last season, highlighted his season with an eighth place finish in the Southern Conference championship with a three-day total of 227. Sangid led the team with a 76.4 scoring average in his freshman campaign, the eighth best individual effort in school history. Meanwhile, Cline posted a top- 25 finish in three different tournaments last season. Cline echoes Wike's positive outlook for this season, believing the team's potential is higher than he's ever seen. "We've got some new guys that can play this and a lot of talent this year," he said. "This year in the next couple years we'll be more competitive than we've ever been." Wike points to the team's first tournament, the Liberty University Fall Golf Classic on September 25-26, as a measuring stick for exactly where his team stands. "There will be some top-ranked teams at Liberty," he said. "We're going to find out how good we are when we go down there." The next two tournaments, however, Wike feels extremely confident about his team's chances for victory. These matches are the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Intercollegiate and the Chattanooga Fall Invitational held October 2-3 and 9-10, respectively. "Our goal this season is to be in the final threesome in every tournament we play," said Wike. "That's where you want to position yourself." Cline has set his goals for Western's golf squad even higher than Wike, expanding his sights to competing in national competition:"We all want to compete for the Southern Conference championship but our goal is to make it to the NCAA tournament." IMP OUTDOOR Cross Country teams Looking to Rebound by Denise Merritt Staff Writer The 2000 men and women's Catamount cross-country team is adorned with young talent that will add power and depth to the program. Yet, head coach Danny Williamson will look for leadership from the returning team members, with major contributions from the newcomers to become a well-oiled team. "People are really working well together," said Williamson. "Running together as a group is what separates good teams from bad teams. Working together is what's going to give us the opportunity to be successful." Last season, the men's team finished ninth in the conference. Sophomore Jesse Norman and red-shirt freshman Caleb Bailey look to lead the squad to a better year in 2000. Out of the 12-man squad, eight are essentially beginners to the sport. "All the newcomers can step up to the level — they have so far in practice," Norman says. Sophomore Drew Godfrey and junior Andy Pruett are also ready to step it up and make contributions this season. "If junior Michael Farmer can return to his freshman form that can form a punch for WCU returners," head coach Danny Williamson says. Irving Hunter, Cory McCall, Philip Ramsey, Edward Vick, Ben Watkins and Worth Allen are the new Catamounts who will give energy and intensity to the men's team. The women's team is equally as young as the men, with seven out of the 11 team members being rookies. Looking to lead the Lady Cats are juniors Holly Bright and Denise Merritt, as well as sophomores Melanie Cooper and Whitney Woods. The new members of the team include Vanita Carlson, Roslyn Bingley, Becky Signoretti, Alissa Short, Megan Thacker and Jerrine Peeler. "All come with high credentials and we expect great things from them," Williamson says of the freshman. "On paper this looks like a rebuilding year; however, on the course it may not be that way. It is a very well balanced team that could be one of the best in WCU history." Williamson is not the only one eager for the upcoming season. "I think that it's exciting because it's a chance to start with a new group," said Holly Bright. "They are gong to be a vital part of the team." Williamson added, "Team chemistry is good with both groups and that's important." Western Carolina will host the first two meet of the season, September 2 and 9, with the Papa's Pizza Invitational and the Catamount Classic, respectively. 2000 Cross Country Schedule Date Meet Site Sept. 2 Papa's Pizza Invitational Cullowhee Sept. 9 Catamount Classic Cullowhee Sept. 22 Great American Cross Country Festival Charlotte Sept. 30 Clemson Invitational/ASU Invitational Oct. 14 North Carolina Intercollegiate Championships Cullowhee Oct. 28 Southern Conference Championships Boone Nov. 11 NCAA District Regionals Greenville, SC Nov. 20 NCAA Division I National Championships Ames, Iowa Pot more information cull 7479 or 7206
