  • Ag. FALL SPORTS PREVIEW August 18, 1999 Soccer WCU Gearing Up for Debut of Women's Soccer by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Legendary men's basketball coach Dean Smith once said about the University of North Carolina, "This is a women's soccer school. We're just trying to catch up." No one would say that about Western Carolina University, but that's something that head coach Debbie Hensley and the women's soccer team want to change. Hensley, a 1995 graduate of Georgia Southern^ is very optimistic about the coming season. The team started practicing around August 10 with two and three practices a day. Once classes start, they will tone that infancy, Hensley down to a single practice a day. feels that her "We've had very intense practices. Hensley feels that Furman and UNC Greensboro will be the top two teams in the Southern Conference. As a matter of a fact, Furman is ranked eighth in numerous preseason polls for the South region, which is extremely high for a Southern Conference team. Hensley is extremely excited about bringing women's soccer to WCU. "With the recent success of the USA World Cup team, this is a perfect time to introduce the game to Cullowhee," stated Hensley. "I've got a group of girls that are working hard to make WCU's women's soccer program a success both now and for the future." Assistant coach Brad Northington echoes Hensley's feelings about the year of Catamount sports. "With our afternoon games, they are the perfect tailgate opportunities. Students can come tailgate and watch us, then go to the football games." The WCU women's soccer team will begin their inaugural season Friday, August 27 when SoCon favorite Furman comes to Cullowhee for a 4:00 contest at the new soccer field located near the lower tennis courts and driving range.
