  • March 29, 2000 NEWS WESTERN CAROLINIAN I1KO Sponsors Push America by Crystal Frame Editor-in-Chief Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity will hold a scaffold sit April 3-5 in front of the University Center to raise money for the fraternity's national philanthropy, Push America. According to Pi Kappa Phi National Headquarters, "Push America is the national outreach project of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Because of our commitment to brotherhood, we provide leadership opportunities, services and education to promote a greater understanding of persons who have developmental disabilities." P.U.S.H, which originally stood for Pi Kappa Phi "Play Units for the their strength Severely Handicapped," was founded in 1976. Phi Kappa Phi joined with Thomas Sayre, an artist and architect, and helped develop funding for Sayre's project. By experimenting with his own architectural designs, Sayre created facilities for "therapeutic play" for severely disabled children. Today, Pi Kappa Phi has changed the initial name of P.U.S.H. to Push America and broadened the project to serve all people with disabilities. With the help of chapters across the United States, such as the Gamma Epsilon chapter at photo courtesy participates in Push America in order in unity with persons with disabilities WCU, the fraternity hopes to continue the success the program has enjoyed in the past. The local Pi Kappa Phi chapter at WCU has a goal of raising $2,000 for Push America. Starting at 12:00 noon Monday, April 3, the brothers will camp out by the UC. "Pi Kappa Phi is trying to make the campus and surrounding community more aware of this program. This scaffold sit is our way of helping raise awareness for people with disabilities," says Stephen Williams, Push Chairman for the local chapter. Not only are Pi Kapps staying at the UC 24 hours a day over the three days, but they have other events planned during that time as well. On Tuesday at 4pm, residents from Webster Children's Group Home will be visiting the scaffold sit. The children and staff hope to bring support from the community for Push America. "We are really excited about it," says Kim Brooks, House Manager for Webster Children's Group Home. "We are glad they [Pi Kapps] have taken the initiative to raise awareness of people with disablities." Another event planned during the fundraiser is an open auction. photo courtesy Stephen Williams Pi Kapps Stephen Williams (left) and Matt Rose participated in Gear Up Florida as part of the 1999 Push America fundraiser. Scott Terry to share Everyone is welcome to attend while several brothers will be auctioned off on Tuesday at 6pm at the scaffold. The buyer will have the Pi Kapp brother for 24 hours. The brother will cook, clean, or do other odd jobs. Some of Pi Kappa Phi's student leaders will be auctioned off as well. Russ Thompson (aka "AC Slater" or "Hollywood") the well known DJ from WCU's Z-91 will be both the announcer for the fundraiser and will be open for bidding himself. Thompson hopes to go to a "lovely Cullowhee lady." "A woman is buying a servant for 24-hours to fulfill all her needs," Thompson said. "How can she lose?" Aramand DeNuzzio, the daytime radio personality also from Z-91, and Johnathan "JJ" Rowe, student body president, are also available. If purchased, DeNuzzio stated that he would do "as you wish." "Pi Kappa Phi sponsors the scaffold sit for Push America, but the students at WCU are what makes the program successful," said Billy Lang, president of fci Kappa Phi at WCU. "So please show your support and stop by."
