  • February 9, 2000 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR WESTERN CAROLINIAN Z-91 Isn't An Urban Station Dear Editor, Gunther Cordovba's letter last week was nauseating. Everyone has the right to be ignorant, but Cordovba's blatant abuse of that privilege compels me to write this letter. To assist in formulating the basis for my argument, allow me to define the word "urban" as it applies to radio. Urban stations- that is- stations playing urban music, have a "formulated drivel", or format, that consists of R&B, rap, and "jams". "Wannabe" urban stations, presumably play the same thing as their counterparts over in the "real" paradigm. Ask any 102Jamz (a "real" station with an Urban format in Greensboro) listener, and they will likely tell you that WWCU is NOT an urban radio station, but instead a carefully crafted piece of art that successfully fuses the elements of many popular forms of music. A beacon, standing tall above the Cullowhee metroplex, and shining through the darkness to provide an exceptional broadcast service, as diverse and unique as the populace it serves. If I may quote the letter from Gunther Cordovba, "WWCU is such a wannabe urban station that they can't even produce professional sounding 'tags' or ID snippets." This negative Slashing the Bar Dear Editor, The findings of the program review committee are nothing to be upset about. After all, they said the recommendations are only advisory in nature. Yahoo Cullowhee! But Western's self-esteemed Chancellor has taken the political high ground on this issue with his words virtually guaranteeing the demise of the programs. "Institutions change ... we need to conceptualize what it means to be a university within the context of where people are," Bardo said. "This is very direct in a lot of peoples lives." Yes, Chancellor, institutions change, many times for the worse. And that will be the case at WCU if the PRC and Bardo have their way. By offering a wide array of programs and departments, universities serve as a breeding ground for future professionals and academics. Programs slated to get the axe under the PRC's findings serve a vital role in the development of these professionals. One needs to look no further than Dr. Bardo's resume (http://www.wcu.edu/ chancellor/index/frontpage/Resume.htm) to see the importance of these ill-fated programs in his life. Bardo has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociol- and untruthful attack reflects poorly upon those who buy into its dark and false message. I can't personally make the connection between being an urban station trapped in the "wannabe" paradigm and hiring a voiceover professional. One has nothing to do with the other. I invite Mr. Cordovba to actually listen to the radio station. Evan, Hollywood AC Slater, Armand, and myself, among others, all have produced our own liners, or "snippets". I believe they are of the highest quality and I'm confident he will enjoy listening to these outstanding examples of radio production. Other voice work is done by one of the finest voice professionals in the country. I'm sure you agree that Jeff Laurence's liners give our station the professional sounding edge that distinguishes us from "wannabe" stations that embellish mediocrity. Before closing this letter, I would like to invite Mr. Cordovba to call me during my airshift, Tuesdays and Thursdays form 4 until 7pm, at 227- 7173. It would be an honor to personally play one of Gunther's favorite selections. Eric E. Moore, II Wannabe DJ Assistant Program Director, WWCU-FM ogy, which has components of Child and Family Studies, Economics, Geography and Math-all programs slated for the WCU academic graveyard. Bardo even has a B.A. in Economics, a program that he seems to be willing to sign a death warrant for. His resume even highlights that he currently "speaks widely on issues of technology in education and the role of higher education in economic and community development," areas where these programs are crucial. Unfortunately, Bardo already has earned these degrees and wreaking havoc on the futures of the people of North Carolina seems to be the least of his concerns. Why would a Chancellor whose career has rested on these very same types of programs want to sink them like the Titanic? If Bardo has his way, one more line can be added to his resume when he departs Cullowhee in the near future: "At WCU, Dr. Bardo discontinued programs in Child and Family Studies, Economics, Emergency Medical Care, Geography, Health Service Management, Industrial Distribution, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Math, German, French, Physics and Philosophy. " Keep raising that bar, Dr. John. Don Costello Big Daddy Speaks Out Dear Editor, I would like to congratulate Mr. Gunther Cordovba on his letter to the editor which appeared in the February 2,2000 edition of the Carolinian. Mr. Cordovba I truly admire that someone has finally spoken out against WWCU-FM. You are one of the first that has done so properly. I am going to inform the audience of the Carolinian as to why WWCU-FM "appears" to be "a sub-standard, wannabe urban station." First, take a small group of "kids" who think that popularity is a driving force in life and let them be a disc jockey at a radio station. Next take a large group of "kids" who left their homes and their high schools thinking that this (Rap and Hip-hop) was the best music ever created. Put them all together and what have you got? A group of non-conformist jocks who won't listen to or play songs for anyone unless they A Presidential Suggestion Dear Editor, Ralph Nader for President! Named by Life Magazine as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century. Defender of the working class. Founder of Public Citizen—the Nation's largest consumer advocacy organization. A constant critic of the World Trade Organi zation (WTO) and corporate irresponsibility. Former presidential candidate for the Green Party. He cannot be bought off by Big-Buc special interests and fat-cat campaign donors. There is no other person even remotely qualified to be President. John Cassella scream "EVVVVAAAAN or AAAAAA CCCCC" from the rooftops when they call. Don't get me wrong, I am very fond of both of the before named jocks. I simply needed to use a common example. So for all you people out there who are "mad as hell" about the programming at WWCU-FM, please SAY something. Write letters, stop by, send e-mails, and most important, tell your friends to STOP requesting crap. Only then can we truly move toward actually becoming "Today's Best Mix". You really can't blame the staff of WWCU-FM because after all if you give a monkey a gun and the monkey shoots someone, who are you going to blame? It's YOUR station, YOU payed for it, DO something about it! Jeff T. Barnett Soon to be former General Manager, WWCU-FM Confederate Flag Raises More Questions Dear Western Carolinian and Parties involved in the discussion over the rebel flag: It disgusts me that both parties hid racist rhetoric behind apparently intelligent words. The flag that flies over the capital of South Carolina is the battle flag of the confederacy, and is in fact not even the "Stars and Bars". The flag over South Caro- lina stands for the ancestors of many Americans and does not represent a singularly racist ideal. Most Confederate soldiers ventured into battle knowing that slavery was a cornerstone of the Confederacy, but also knowing that in AMERICA it was not illegal nor was it ever made illegal in the United States during the war. The problem is that every White and Black southerner should realize the history of that flag and keep it from the hands of ignorant rednecks and racists. The battle flag has been sullied by Neo-Nazis and racists, but its his tory outweighs the hate that surrounds it. The KKK has in fact always had its highest numbers in the Mid west. These states unfurled the Union banner during the War of Northern Aggression, but while these full-blooded Americans disgraced the sanctity of the Confederate Battle Flag they are never blamed. It is and always has been simple to point a finger southward and yell "racist." Also for Mr. Duncan to say that the flag has no meaning in the 21 st century is to forget the very bonds of unity this nation gained from the Civil war. It is not right for one to judge the flying of that flag, especially if one does so only in a blind defense or attack upon ideas not understood. I am not an ardent battle flag-flying believer in the mythology of the Lost Cause, but I am also not a racist who hides behind the lexicon of an educated American.
