  • ■■' i s I i i \ 10 WESTERN CAROLINIAN GET A LIFE December 8,1999 A Festivus of Holiday Films by Alex Esmon Features Editor "Tis the season for all Oscar contenders to show their stuff. Each Holiday season, theaters are peppered with films that studios have been holding all year, just to release them in time for the Oscar rush. Now, everyone knows that "The Green Mile" is coming out next week and many are eagerly awaiting the Andy Kaufman Biopic, "The Man on the Moon" due out the week of Christmas. Both films have been bombarded with critical acclaim, but remember: two films do not a season make. As you leave campus in the next few days and make you way back to your home towns or cities, keep an eye on some ofthe other films that are due out this month and at the turn of the new year. There is a stocking's worth of films this holiday season that—if I am right- will prove to be stiff competition for the two already labeled giants. So as you flock to the theaters, as I know you will, look for the following films and take a chance on seeing a real holiday treat. The cast for the film is outstanding. Julliane Moore, Jason Robards, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, Phillip Baker Hall, Felicity Huffman, and even a short cameo appearance from Tom Cruise. The word is that Cruise could recieve a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his brief photo courtesy Universal Pictures Denzel Washington as ex-boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. photo courtesy New Line Cinema Julianne Moore and Jason Robards in 'Magnolia.' Magnolia: Anderson's homage to Altman For two years, we have eagerly awaited the follow-up to Paul Anderson's sprawling porn epic, "Boogie Nights." As of Christmas, we will no longer have to wait. Think of it as an extra present on an already good day. Anderson has been incredibly hush- hush about the plot line but one thing that is known is the setting. The film apparently takes place in a 24-hour period in modern day San Fernando Valley, and deals with relationships between family members, some good and some bad. stint, a part which is supposedly a departure from anything he's attempted before. "Magnolia" has drawn comparisons to the lengthy, multi-plot dramas of Robert Altman. Not a bad parallel when one considers the success of Altman's films and the respect he commands form his peers. This could prove successful for Anderson, who has a solid shot at a nomination for Best Director. The Cider House Rules Irving takes control It was just last year that John Irving's best-selling novel "A Prayer For Owen Meany," became the theatrical disaster "Simon Birch," a film so drastically different from the novel, Irving demanded they remove both his name and the books title from the final product. It's a amazing the difference a year makes. "The Cider House Rules," a WW2 era story that is literally impossible to sum up in two or three lines. Irving has long been regarded by his peers for his winding, unrelenting style, thus making it hard to adapt his stories to film- But perhaps with the novelist in the screenwriter's chair, the film will receive the care it deserves. Once again, the cast of "The Cider House Rules" is stellar, with the likes of Michael Caine, Delroy Lindo, Tobey MaGuire, Charlize Theron, Jane Alexander, and Paul Rudd. Caine, best known for his work in British film, has already received serious acclaim from the Toronto Film Festival and critics alike. The Hurricane Denzel takes a swing at Oscar For years, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was a folk hero sitting in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Now, 15 years after his release from prison, his story is told, and the word is that Denzel Washington is starring a Best Actor nomination right in the face, The film is directed by Norman Jewison, the talented film-maker who brought us "Moonstruck." "The Hurricane" was filmed on location in the Rah way State Prison, now the East Jersey State Prison "Hurricane" Carter was exonerated from the charges of a triple homicide in 1985 after a group of Canadian and a 15-year old student from Brooklyn named Lesra. When asked about his thoughts on the power of the story, Washington said, "No matter what you think of the facts, you can't deny the power of the story. Perhaps voters won't be able to deny Washington his second Oscar. Cradle Will Rock Robbins remembers Well-es Imagine if you will, a 30s era true-story film about a musical directed by Orson Welles that was shut down after a very short run thanks to government intervention. Now imagine that this film starred photo courtesy Touchstone Pictures Susan Sarandon and John Cusack in 'Cradle Will Rock.' such actors as John Cusack, John Tuturro, Cary Elwes, Hank Azaria, Joan Cusack, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Redgrave, Emily Watson, and the always outstanding Bill Murray. Now imagine the film is of epic length and is directed by the quirky Tim Robbins. Wrap all these thoughts into one, put them on film and you have the new period piece, "Cradle Will Rock," a film that has been termed as "Robbin's Reds." Oscar was kind to Beatty, but will he be equally benevolent to Robbins? We shall see. So there you have it. Four films which have the chance to be Oscar contenders but could just as easily be relegated to the pile of Holiday losers. Oh, and before your attention span runs out, you may also want to try and see the screen adaptation of David Guterson's 1994 mega-novel, "Snow Falling on Cedars." Let's just hope it's better than almost every other novel adaptation Hollywood puts their grubby little hands on. MCAT Want to ace the MCAT? Kaplan's got the answers... and the questions!
