  • November 17,1999 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 23 Lady Catamount Volleyball Whips College of Charleston in Herron's Last Home Game by Jeffrey Sykes Asst. News Editor In the last home game before the Southern Conference Tournament, the Lady Catamount volleyball team whipped the College of Charleston Lady Cougars in three straight games (15-7, 15-13,15-10). Senior middle blocker Ramsey C of C (}_ Herron, of Greens- WCU 3 boro, was recognized before the game in a ceremony in which she was presented flowers and a plaque of recognition in her final home game. Family members, teammates and fans cheered the 5' 10" Herron, who is the career record holder for block assists, leads the team in hitting percentage, is ranked second in total blocks, and joined the 1,000 kill club during the course of Saturday's match. "It's come too soon," said Sue Hulighan, Herron's mother, on her daughter's senior day. Bruce Herron, her father, said, "I wish it wasn't over." Sophomore outside hitter Christy Attebery led the team with 23 kills, much higher than her 5.29 kills per game average, which ranks her eighth nationally. "She is our go-to player," said Herron of her high-flying teammate. "She is dependable, an emotional and statistical leader." Herron began the first game Saturday by winning a side-out on the first rally. WCU smoked to a 4-0 lead behind blocks by Jessica Koehler and Ashley Minton, and a tip by Desiree Trudeau. After smashing spikes by Attebery, and great serves by Bri-Milan Williams, Attebery served two aces in a row for a 14-7 lead. Minton closed game one with a deceptive tip that fell between a group Lady Cou- Lady Cats Win Season Finale by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Head coach Michelle Hansen and the Lady Catamount volleyball team ended their 1999 regular season schedule with WCU 3 a hard-fought win ETSU 2 over mountain rival, East Tennessee State, 3-2 (15-10,4-15,15- 10, 10-15, 21-19), Monday night in Johnson City, TN. The win improved WCU to 19-12 overall, 15-5 in the Southern Conference and secured them the third seed in Friday's tournament. The Lady Bucs finished up 20- 10 overall, and 14-6 in the SoCon. They enter the conference tourney as the #4 seed. "It was a hard fight. It was a battle," said Hansen. "Basically, we wouldn't give up." The Lady Cats were led by sophomore sensation Christy Attebery with 21 kills on 56 attempts. She also added 12 digs, but had 13 errors and four service errors. Two other Cats finished with double- doubles. Senior Ramsey Herron, in her final regular season match, tallied 11 kills and match-high 21 digs, with Desiree Trudeau matching Herron's kills at 11, and adding 13 digs. Herron also had three solo blocks, moving her to the top of the all-time career blocks list. She breaks Regina Brown's mark of 361 set over 1987-90. Herron currently holds the record with 364. The ETSU Bucs had three players hit double-digits in kills, led by Natalie Barrett with 16. The other two were Alice Arnold with 16 and Courtney Sussillo with 10. Western won the first game with a .327 hitting percentage, but dropped the second, hitting a horrid -.087 average while ETSU countered by hitting .414. "We didn't pass well and made some hitting errors. We were in a real slump, but came through in the end," Hansen said. After the back and forth see-sawing of the match, the final game was a marathon. "In game five, they had six match- points all the way to 19-19, but we fought them. They had us on the ropes, but we stayed composed and focused and I'm real proud of the team for that," Hansen said. Not only did the Lady Cats have to fight the ETSU volleyball team, but also the hostile crowd. According to Hansen, around 25-30 of the Bucs football players were in attendance making Brooks Gym very loud. From point 15 on, the Lady Cats faced elimination. However, though tenacious defense and sideouts, WCU stayed in the game. They pulled out the win 21-19 in the end. Hansen said, "To beat ETSU the way we did should erase any doubt that we can't compete and hang in matches. It'd would've been great to dominate, but it was nice to battle and get the win." She went on to add, "The win was good going into the tournament." Cullowhee will get their first chance to host the Southern Conference volleyball tournament this Friday through Saturday in the Ramsey Center. Matches get underway at 10 am on Friday morning and run through the night. gars for a 15-7 win in game one. Game two saw WCU sprint to a 5-2 lead before the Lady Cougars battled back through a long series of rallies to take a 7- 5- lead. Charleston stretched their lead to 11-8, before the Lady Cats rallied to tie at 13 with four points served by Cindy Camp. A carry mistake by Charleston netted WCU the lead, and Attebery sealed the 15- 13 victory in game two with a rejection of a Charleston kill attempt. In the final game, WCU fell behind 0-3 before storming back for a 6-3 lead after Attebery spiked the ball onto a helpless Lady Cougar's head. Koehler blocked a shot for a 10-3 lead. Soon after, Minton made a nice hook tip for a side-out, and Herron blocked a shot for a 12-3 lead. In a fitting ending for a senior's last home game, Herron was involved in a block assist to end the game and the match. "It feels great to beat this team in three," Herron said after the match. "It is a great game to end my home career on." Last week, the Lady Cats disposed of another Charleston team as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs from The Citadel, also in straight sets, 3-0 (15-7, 15-2, 15-3). Koehler led the Lady Cats with 10 kills, eight digs, and two block assists. Milan- Williams and Minton both tallied 11 digs in the win. Hansen used only six of her players to get the win. Western Carolina faltered last Wednesday in Greenville, falling 3-1 (15-10, 15- 7, 6-15, 19-17) to the Furman Lady Paladins. Attebery tallied match-high 22 kills in the losing effort. Minton and Herron followed with 13 and 11, respectively. Minton led the team with a stellar 31 digs. Daniel Hooker, Sports Editor, contributed to this story.
