  • November 17,1999 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 21 Ramsey Herron, Floor General by Denise Merritt Staff Writer Flipping through the pages of history, one would soon discover that battles were won under the leadership of great generals. This season, the women's volleyball team has gone directly in the heat of battle photo courtesy WCU Sports Information Herron (10) excels on and off the court. under the guidance of floor general Ramsey Herron. Herron, the lone senior on the team, exemplifies to the young squad how to be a leader on and off the court. She has excelled in the classroom by earning a cumulative GPA of 3.975. Some of her athletic honors include being the holder of three WCU school records. Ramsey has been surrounded by athletics her whole life. Her father and brother were both collegiate baseball players at Kansas State and Benedict College in Kansas, respectively. Wanting to follow in their cleat marks, she took up softball during her middle school years. In the seventh grade, Ramsey picked up a volleyball for the first time. Volleyball quickly took over the passion she found in softball. She continued to play softball during her freshman year at Northwest Guilford in Greensboro. She gave up softball because of the strain it put on her knees. "I've always had bad knees," said Ramsey. "I thought that I would be wasting them on a sport that I wasn't going to continue." She persevered through many physical aches and pains to obtain a scholarship at WCU. The 5' 10" middle blocker was named to the All-Tournament team in 1997. She holds the records for single season block assists and total career blocks. On Nov. 15, she was added to the record books again when she broke the record for total blocks in a season. "Everything I have accomplished I owe to Coach Hansen," said Ramsey. "She taught me a lot about perservance and overcoming obstacles." Her desire to work hard has carried over into the classroom. In 1998 she was named GTE Academic All-America, second team. She was the only conference player to receive that honor. She also has received many prestigious academic scholarships. Herron plans to graduate in December with a degree in biology. She wants to attend graduate school in the fall of 2000 to study molecular biology or immunology. In July of 2000, she will be wed to Kevin Mclntire, a former cross country and track runner at Western. Ramsey still wants to be competitive after graduation. "I want to do triathlons and road races," she said. Ramsey's leadership and example will not be forgotten after her departure from Western. This is expressed in the words of coach Hansen. file photo Herron with head coach Michelle Hansen. "Ramsey has been such a pleasure to work with for the past three years," said Hansen. "I am very proud of how much she has grown both on and off the court. I know that she will be a success in whatever she chooses to pursue. This program and university will surely miss her." Herron will once again try to lead the Lady Cats to the top of the conference this weekend as Cullowhee hosts the 1999 Southern Conference tournament.
