  • 4% WESTERN ^y CaroliniaN The Cats Are Back in Action Against ETSU. page 15 BUCS East Tennessee State University September 22, 1999 Lady Cats Blast App. by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University Lady Catamount volleyball team continued their streak against the Lady Boone Goons of App. State last night in front of rambunctious fans in the Ramsey Center. Behind the 3-1 (10-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-5) win over ASU, the Lady Cats extended their win- . ACT] 1 ning streak to three _ straight matches. WCU 3 Within those matches, WCU has won nine out of 10 games. Western improves to 4-8 overall on the season, 2-1 in the Southern Conference, while ASU falls to 1-6, 1-3 in conference. Head coach Michelle Hansen was pleased with the win. However, she did see many things that they need to work on. "I'm happy with the win," stated Hansen. "I feel we came out flat and App. came out serving bullets. But I'm pleased with the finish. But, this wasn't our best performance overall." Leading the way offensively for the Lady Cats was sophomore Ashley Minton, with team-high attach percentage .278 on 18 attempts. Ramsey Herron led the team with 14 kills and Christy Attebery added 12. "It's great!" commented Attebery on beating the Apps. "This win will help us regains some confidence." After falling behind 1 -0, the Cats won three-straight to take the match, including a dominating performance in Game 4. Defensively, Hansen's Cats were led by freshman Cindy Camp with 20 digs and two service aces. Attebery was second with 16, and Herron poured in 12. Camp also put the game away in the deciding Game 4 with three-straight points off the serve in her first-ever Appalachian game. "Unbelievable! It was great," said Camp following the game. "The rivalry— it's in my blood now." Attebery added, "The fans are always great. If we could get everyone out every time, that'd be great." Continued on page 14 Update on The Citadel Game by Mike Poston Staff Writer Saturday was a beautiful day for football in Cullowhee. The only problem was that there was no game played. The Citadel failed to involve the Southern Conference and Western Carolina before making the decision to cancel the game. During the decision-making process, The Citadel had suggested that the game be made up on November 20, the week after the Appalachian State game. The only option is for The Citadel to forfeit. The situation is currently being reviewed by a committee, and they will make a recommendation to the conference office. Travis said, "We [Western Carolina] are not interested in rescheduling the game," adding, "It is not fair for a team to decide when they are going to play." The fact that Western Carolina is hosting the Southern Conference volleyball tournament that same weekend was also a concern. On Monday, Walt Nadzak, the Citadel's Athletic Director, called WCU Athletic Director Larry Travis and said they might cancel the football game. Upon receiving the message Travis called Nadzak back and suggested involving the Southern Conference. According to Travis, he also told The Citadel that he would make preparations for the team to come up to Western Carolina early in the week and he would arrange food, lodging, and practice facilities. Travis also offered to try to make arrangements for the families of the players. Later that day Travis Nadzak and the Commissioner of the Southern Conference, Alfred White, held a conference phone call. The Citadel stated that they were, at present time, planning to cancel the game. Travis once again reiterated that Western Carolina wanted to play the game as scheduled. The commissioner suggested that the two programs work it out. After attending the weekly press conference, Travis found out that The Citadel had canceled the game. Travis called the conference office to look at the options. As for a forfeit, Travis said it would not count towards the win-loss total. That also means that it cannot help Western Carolina to gain a play-off berth. Travis said that Western Carolina would comply if the committee decided that they should play the game. The Western Carolina Lady Catamount soccer team notched their first- two home victories, winning in convincing fashion 3-0 and 10-0. Sunday, the Lady Cats defeated the Lady Koalas of Columbia College, 10-0, in a battle of first- year programs. Columbia 0 Head coach WCU 10 Debbie Hensley said she was happy with the two wins, but also commented on how WCU outmatched the Koalas. "They were a pretty weak team, and that's one thing that I talked to the team about before the match," commented Hensley. "We needed to play at our level and we did. We played great." She added, "They were a first-year team, and their coach wanted to play other first-year programs. It was a good break to be on top of some teams for once." Western jumped on Columbia College early in the first half, scoring two goals in a minute-time span. Terri Latimer, with the first of Lauren Howard's two assists of the day, tallied the first strike at the 8:53 mark, followed by an unassisted score by Christel Kirkpatrick at 9:52. From that point on, the Lady Cats dominated, not allowing the ball to cross the mid-field line for minutes on end, out shooting the Lady Koalas 42-0. Freshman Nardia Moore had a very impressive afternoon. Despite tallying only one score of her own, Moore recorded four assists, making her a part of half of the Lady Cat scoring on the afternoon. Several Lady Cats tallied their first goals of the season on Sunday. In addition to Lattimer's first-score, Tracy Everhart, Lauren Howard, Kristina Hritz, Kelly Barker, and Meghan Doherty all tallied their first-ever WCU goal. Yasmin Morton and Stacey Mardis also added scores, with Mardis' score coming on a header. Goal keeper Allison Rounds recorded the shut-out victory. Friday saw the Lady Cats get their first- home victory, 3-0, over the Limestone College Saints. "This win lifts the team's spirits. For one, we wanted to win one for the fans who keep coming out and supporting us," commented Hensley after the match. "I'm always happy with a shutout, and this is the first home win!" Moore once again played extraordinarily, scoring two goals in the win. Her first score came a mere 2:59 into the contest off a penalty kick. The other tally came in the 84th minute, unassisted on a free kick. Freshman Morgan Foresman recorded her third goal of the year in the 28th minute to make it 2-0 at the time. Kelly Barker had the assist. Mandi Tinsley, freshman goalkeeper, tallied the shutout victory for Hensley's Cats. "There were little things we got out of both [weekend matches]," explained Hensley. "There are girls that need to score for us, and they got to this weekend."
