  • 6 CaroliniaN FEATURES September 22,1999 Gran Torino Lights Up by Jeffrey Leatherwood Staff Writer Gran Torino is a group we will be seeing more of in the near future. Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, these nine musicians met during college four years ago. After the lure of professional music proved too tempting, Gran Torino left the university environment and never looked back. What kind of sound do they have? According to lead vocalist Chris Ford, their emphasis has always been a mixture of R&B, Jazz, and Rock n* Roll. Their demo reveals a developing jazz fusion sound with emphasis on brass arrangements. In addition to Ford, who also plays rhythm guitar, the band boasts Stephen Decker on lead guitar and Todd Overstreet, the band's bassist. Overstreet has just recently announced his marriage, making him the only member who isn't an eligible bachelor. I am personally envious because a photograph in their CD booklet shows him playing an Alembic bass, an instrument I have always coveted because my own hero, John Entwistle of The Who, first made them famous during the late 70s. Well, at least I have my Rickenbackers ... Ahem. Back to Gran Torino. Two drummers provide the percussion with contrasting styles. Whit Pfohl has been described as a more groove-oriented drummer while his partner, David Heyer, is interested more in jazz and is a recent addition to the group. So far, this line-up is only slightly peculiar because of twin drumkits, but the remainder of the band gives Gran Torino a distinctive edge because of the variety of instruments involved. Scott Pederson plays trumpet and trombone, while Dexter Murphy also plays trombone and plays most of the keyboards, including Hammond B-3 Organ and electric piano. Jason Thompson is the main saxophone player, while P.J. Alexander rounds up the group with additional trumpets and trombones. One could almost say Gran Torino is two bands in one. So far, they have recorded a demo tape and a live album, the latter of which Chris Ford said was recorded at the Chameleon in Myrtle Beach, SC. "We would really like to make a great record apart from our live show," remarked the band's frontman. "We have a new release, unnamed as of this time, which comes out on January 18," he promised. Gran Torino has appeared alongside a wide gamut of performers throughout the South and Southeast. Classics from the 70s, such as War, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and reggae superstar Jimmy Cliff, have shared billing with Ford and Co., as have more contemporary acts such as Violent Femmes, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Widespread Panic. When asked about the pressures of road life, Chris Ford confided that as "mentally wearing" as a luxury-free tour can be, the band sees "a lot of America in a short space of time."
