  • September 22,1999 SPORTS CaroliniaN 15 Cats to Battle Bucs on Women's Golf Breaks Fox SportsNet South More Records by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor While the majority of Cullowhee will be basking in Mountain Heritage this Saturday, the Catamount football team will be taking on conference foe East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee. After the unscheduled week off, compliments of Hurricane Floyd and The Citadel (see story page 16), Bleil and company open up their 1999 Southern Conference season. Head coach Bill Bleil considers ETSU "a great football team." "Their running back is playing well, but their quarterback is a little banged up," stated Bleil at his weekly press conference. "Their defensive backfield runs well." Western Carolina leads the overall series over the Bucs 20-19-1, but have dropped three of the last four meetings, with the Cats victory coming last year in Cullowhee in double-overtime. ETSU enters this game riding a three- game winning streak this season. They are 3-0, 2-0 in the Southern Conference, with wins over The Citadel and a tough-game last week at VMI. Due to their two conference wins, the Bucs are tentatively atop the SoCon standings, with WCU in a four-way tie for third at 0-0. The Catamounts have history on their side as they enter the "Mini-Dome." WCU has won their conference opener every year since 1986. That time spans the tenure of four head coaches. Another historical fact; ETSU hasn't started 4-0, which their record would be if they were victorious this weekend, since 1946. They have started out 3-0 twice in the 1990's, only to lose their fourth game. Senior Darius Hooks will face his brother, Victor Hooks, this Saturday. Victor, an offensive guard, plays for the Bucs. In the two games that these two have played head-to-head, the series is tied. The game will be aired live on Fox SportsNet South this Saturday at 12:30. This marks the fifth time that the Cats and the Bucs have been featured on the Fox affiliate, with another game being featured on ESPN. In televised games, ETSU holds a slim 3-2 advantage. iIjJUiJjL/; CUSTOM SflR&eMPRlMIMa, E-M&ROHfcRY AMD UOTERIMG Tote. 0ag*s, GkoM Qhirtiz. And More... 828-293-3112 528 Centennial Drive, Cullowhee email: www.simpiytees@yahoo.com by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor These days, it seems like every time the Lady Catamount golf team takes the course, records can be heard breaking all around them. For the second straight tournament, the women's golf team broke their two-round scoring record and had an individual best round, this time at the Draper Valley Invitational from Radford, Va. The tourney was won by the College of Charleston, who shot a team 600, 24 shots above par. James Madison was second, followed by Winthrop, Methodist, and host, Radford University. Western Carolina placed eleventh in the order. However, they beat their closest competitor by 193 strokes. "We're real excited how our team is progressing," stated head coach Steve Lott. "Things are really positive right now." Leading the way for Lott's Lady Cats was senior Sarah Parris. She tied her lowest single-round scoring with a 76 on the first day of the tournament, followed by a 77 to give her a 153 for the tourney. The amazing thing about that is she did it all with a cast on her right leg. "She's amazing," commented Lott on Parris's performance. "She was the talk of the tournament. This is her last year and she's wanting to do well." Parris placed tied for 12th at nine-over par. Suzanne Shipley was WCU's second- highest finisher with a 158, 14 strokes above par. She followed her first-round 78 with a 80. "Shipley continues to play well," added Lott. Western trailed Appalachian State by one stroke going into the last day. That was the closest that WCU had been to ASU in a tournament. The two freshmen that made the trip placed 40 and 56. Katie Schmidt finished with a 21 above par 165, while Shelley Glenister was at 27 above par at 171. "The freshmen played well for their first tournament. I was impressed with [Katie] Schmidt and Shelley [Glenister]. They proved that they belong on this team." %VCH\AX.VNS-r SALES Over 100 Bikes in Stock Choose from: i_rdi II mi lUkdlcr W ■*P"^****J**W jf^ WHm-Tttm-M.msms A Wide Assortment of Repair Parts, Bicycle Components, & Tools at Prices Comparable to Catalogs.
