V Carolinian 15 'The Cats' Complete Preseason Scrimmages Set to Open Season Against MHC Blue Devils photo by Don Costello Junior tailback Tim Vaught, a transfer from Brevard College, looks to round the corner in the Purple-Gold scrimmage game by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University football team completed their pre-season scrimmages with last Thursday's Purple/ Gold game in preparation for tomorrow's season opener against Mars Hill. "I think that the number one's played well tonight," stated head coach Bill Bleil. "The two sides were kinda feeling each other out. They played with a lot of intensity. Another key is that we didn't get any body hurt, and that's always a positive." Senior quarterback Shawn Snyder completed 13-of-24 passes for 238 yards, including a 65-yard TD pass to red-shirt freshman Jeremy Carter. Carter caught three balls for 148 yards and two scores. Junior Aaron Wright caught four passes for 104 yards. Freshman Michael Banks also pulled down seven balls for 88 yards. Third-string quarterback David Hunter completed 54 percent of his passes (7-of- 13) for 146 yards. Hunter also tossed a touchdown to Carter. Bleil stated that he was pleased with the play of Shawn Snyder and David Hunter at quarterback. He also thought Aaron Wright and Jeremy Carter looked good at the receiver position. Defensively, cornerbacks Lamont Ransby and Randy Shaw combined for nine tackles on the evening, while preseason All-Southern Conference defensive end Anthony Jenkins made four tackles. Sophomore Donnie Bryant also made four tackles from his strong safety position. One of the main goals and objectives of the scrimmage was to get more practice for the second and third strings under 'game-like' situations. "Our two's and three's got a lot of reps. I was pleased with them in the second half [of the scrimmage]," said Bleil. "I think we're a better team." The Cats will get their first chance against someone other than their teammates Thursday. For the second straight year, they open the season against 'Blue Devils.' This year's opponent is a little less formidable. The Mars Hill Blue Devils come to Whitmire Stadium, where the Cats went 4-1 last year. WCU defeated Mars Hill in the last meeting in 1992,42-6. The Catamounts exploded for 21 second quarter points to roll past Mars Hill. "We've got to go in and control the game, play hard and execute," stated Bill Bleil last week in his weekly press conference. "For Mars Hill, it is going to be like their 'bowl' game." The MHC offense is led by preseason All-SAC selection, sophomore tight end David Cassell. Cassell caught 36 passes for 398 yards last season. A former WCU player, Terrence Stokes, is currently playing for MHC. Stokes, who started for the Cats two years ago, will see some time running the ball. Defensively, Mars Hill is led by second team preseason All-SAC pick Corey Thomas. In 1998, the senior linebacker was second on the team in tackles with 78 hits. Thomas also tallied 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Last season Mars Hill was 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the SAC. Coach Bleil stated, "I think we're ready to play. [The team is] talking about Mars Hill. They're ready to start hitting someone other than themselves." Kickoff for the season-opener is 7 p.m. at E. J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field.
