  • 8 CaroliniaN FEATURES September 1,1999 Hendersonville Hosts Apple Fest This Weekend by Holly Rhodarmer Staff Writer HENDERSONVILLE - It is nearly impossible to walk a block in downtown Hendersonville without encountering a proud wooden hand-crafted sign that reminds the visitor in dramatic script that they are in Historic Hendersonville. The downtown area is full of antique shops, small cafes, dress shops and even a tobbocconist. The relatively calm town will be swarming with excitement this weekend, with the Annual Apple Festival in full swing. Last year, 250,000 people visited the festival, which features activities for all ages. This year, the festival will run September 4-7. Apples hold a secure place in American culture. Embodying all that is good and wholesome - such as apple pie - as well as promoting health ("an apple a day keeps the doctor away"), and the hope for good grades, by presenting a teacher with an apple. In North Carolina apples hold a more tangible value - money. In Western North Carolina alone, apples bring $21 million a year to local growers. Henderson county is ranked seventh in the nation for apple production, and is the largest producer in the state. The festival began as a centennial celebration in Hendersonville, sponsored by prominent citizens in the community. During World War II, the festival was discontinued. It reconvened in 1947 under a new name, the Apple Blossom Festival, and was held in the spring. The blossoming of the apple trees is difficult to predict, and is slightly different every year. Thus the festival was moved to the fall to celebrate the harvesting of the apples. The Apple festival of the 1950's was centered on a beauty pageant and the King Apple parade. The pageant has long since disappeared from the schedule of events, but the King Apple parade still exists. This year, the parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. In place of the beauty pageant, an Apple Ambassador is chosen. Usually a junior in high school, the young girl must have exemplary grades, solid public speaking skills, and a working knowledge of apples. The Kiwanis Country Apple Pancake Breakfast will showcase the freshly harvested apples on Friday. The breakfast runs from 7:00-10:00 a.m. at the first Presbyterian Church, there is a $5.00 charge. Saturday's festivities begin with the 37th Annual Opportunity House Arts & Crafts & Bake Sale, 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Hendersonville will host their annual Apple Festival from September 4-7. photo by Holly Rhodarmer The festival will also host an Apple Recipe Contest, Apple Orchard Tour, Sidewalk vendors, and an Antique Car Show. Music plays a central role in the festival. The Buddy K Big Band, an 18-piece ensemble will provide entertainment Friday, September 4, from 6-10 p.m.. General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board, who have been prominent in the music industry since the 1970's, will play Saturday evening from 8-10 p.m. U.B.U, cane THEUERUE PIPE m Brnm at C9 Lusci&us Jacks©n MARVELOUS 3 -JOYDROP ECONOLINE CRUSH Just Added: MOBV VALLEY FLORIST CONGRATULATES THE WINNERS OF OUR VALLEY BALLYHOO PRIZE DRAWINGS 1st Prize: 1/2 Doz Roses in Vase Jennifer Bishop 2nd Prizes: 2 Roses in Bud Vase Jaime Dyson Beth Parker 3rd Prizes: 2 Carnations in Bud Vase KrystalYarbrough Amanda Humphrey 4th Prizes: 2 Carnations in Paper Hannah Hackworth Gretchen Best 5th Prizes: 1 Rose in Paper Bonnie Robinson Dana Davidson Jennifer Baarson 568 Centennial Drive 293-5200 or Ultimate Band Unit, will give spectators a variety pack of music: Motown, soul, disco, rock and roll, beach and soul, with more than 50 costume changes per concert. The show will be held on the courthouse lawn on Sunday from 6-10 p.m.. Other regional bands will perform throughout the festival, and all concerts are free. Though the Apple festival is the main event in Hendersonville this weekend, the city holds other tempting attractions. The Flat Rock Playhouse will present the musical 'Honky Tonk Angels' September 1 through September 5. Evening shows begin at 8:15 p.m., matinees at 2:15 p.m. The Arts Center displays 'The Magic of Water Colors' September 1-18. The Western North Carolina Air Museum, located near the Hendersonville airport, offers an educational and exciting experience for all ages. Also near downtown Hendersonville is the Carl Sandburg home. Perched on top of a hill, Sandburg's home gives insight into one of the most talented minds of the century. Hendersonville has much to offer. From cultural events to historic land marks, it holds something for everyone. This weekend it will be rich with the aroma of apples, and the sound of people from all over the south celebrating fall, and harvest of this fruit that has become legendary in America.
