  • THE CULLO W H E E Y 0 D E L DR. A. T. ALLEN Who, as President-Elect and State Superintendent, contributed largely to the formulation of the present policies of Cullowhee as a strictly professional school for the training of elementary teachers. PRESIDENT HUNTER (Continued from page 1) public schools of his native county, Madison; served for three years as Principal of High Schools in Buncombe County, North Carolina; and later served as President of South- side Institute, at Chase City, Va. His next position was a professorship in English in Woman's College, Richmond, Va. He then took the professional study of education at Columbia, and after a yen's work in this field was made Associate Professor and head of the Department of Education in Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Tex. From there he went to Baylor College, Belton, Tex., as Professor of Education, which position he held for one year. For three years before coming to Cullowhee, he was Prut', of Education at Wake Forest College, and while there he organized the first Summer School, of which he was director for two years. He has taught in the Summer Schools of Asheville, the University °f North Carolina, Southern Methodist University, and Baylor College. While at Harvard he was Assistant to Dean Henry W. Holmes, of the MRS. RUTH BRYAN OWEN AT CULLOWHEE FEB. 1ST (Continued from page 1) sociated with the Duchess of Marlborough, Lady Paget, Viscountess Harcourt and other leading women of the Empire, on the Executive Committee of the American Women's War Relief Fund, which financed and operated a great hospital in Devonshire, caring for thousands of wounded men during the war. Mrs. Owen is a leading woman in Florida and perhaps the peak of her career was reached in June, 1928, when she won the Democratic nomination for Congress in her Florida district by a tremendous majority. Mrs. Owen is gifted with a voice of natural carrying power, having associated from her youth with public speakers of national prominence, and having achieved very early in life, a brilliant success as lecturer for the Extension Department of the University of Nebraska, she now speaks not only with authority but with a delightful ease and charm. Education, and scholarship in edu- ssisted Dr. Alexan- •vey of the schools Graduate School won a competitive cation. He also a der Inglis in a su of Augusta, Me. During President Hunter's five years' administration, the School has made rapid strides and gratifying Progress along numerous lines. Evidences of such progress will be noted ln other columns and, especially, in tne recent publication of the President's Annual Report. The physical development of the plant and the improvement of the campus and grounds are only external evidences of finer and nobler purposes within. Every Walk, wall, and shrub are but monu- ments of the man of vision for high- " ideals and better things. But "esident Hunter's achievements can- *ot be measured in material things. e has been largely instrumental in wilding up a spirit of loyalty, ser- 'ce> Professionalism, and Christian ' eals that will continue to be dis- "nctively and essentially a part of Ullowhee. CULLOWHEE NORMAL HOLDS "A" RATING AS JUNIOR TEA. COLLEGE (Continued from page 1) ing a very systematic program of work by which he plans to have all these low points brought up to the standard within the alloted time. While improvements are being made consistently along all lines, he plans definitely to take care of one of these deficiencies each year in the order named so that by the fall of 1931 the School will have a permanent "A" rating without reservations. During the last few months gratifying achievements have been accomplished, especially in the matters of laboratory and library facilities. The Home Economics department has been moved to its new quarters in the Training School annex where two new rooms have been especially arranged and provided with modern fixtures and equipment. The Chemistry laboratory in the basement of the Joyner Building has been changed throughout with the walls and floor of the room remodeled and the latest equipment of teacher and student desks, gas burners, scales, etc., installed. The Library has made remarkable growth in the addition of new fixtures and volumes. Plans are now being made to add an increasingly large number of books within the next few months and to enlarge the reading room by the addition of an adjoining classroom. President Hunter is looking ahead with an eye of vision to the making of Cullowhee a Junior Teachers' College with the best equipment and the best trained faculty tion. i the Associa- A WORD OF TRIBUTE TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES (Continued from page 1) trustees of any of our public institutions as highly patriotic and notably unselfish. It is our desire that the public know that much of the success of our institution is due to the Board of Trustees, and their work is highly appreciated by the President of our institution and by all who are interested in its growth.
