I I I I I NEWS August 25,1999 August 16 Officers cited a male non-student for allowing a passenger to ride on his motorcycle without a helmet at 11:50 a.m. Before the citation was issued, the driver and passenger were stopped and warned. They were seen riding in the same manner a second time and cited. Officers arrested a male non-student in connection with the break-in of several cars which occurred at Helder last week. Bond was set at $9000. Officers responded to a report of marijuana present in a room on the 7th floor of Scott Hall at 4:00 p.m. At that time, the occupant of the room who owned the very small amount of marijuana was warned and the incident was referred to Student Development. However, the female student involved became involved in a disturbance later over the incident and officers charged her with simple possession at 8:35 p.m. Officers responded to a report of bottles being thrown from windows in Scott at 1:39 a.m. No contact with suspects. August 17 At 7:20 a.m., a staff member reported that someone had damaged a state-owned vehicle with a firearm while the vehicle was parked at the Warehouse on the Old Cullowhee Road between 5:00 p.m. on 8/ 16 and 7:00 a.m. on 8/17. At 10:52 p.m., officers recovered a speed limit sign from a room on the first floor of Leatherwood. The person who possessed the sign was warned about the law regarding possession of DOT signs. At midnight, officers referred four underage students, two males and two females, to Housing for follow-up action after finding them on the 7th floor of Scott Hall in possession of alcohol. August 18 At 3:00 p.m., a student reported a verbal assault by a male vendor which had occurred in front of Scott. The investigation is continuing. At 4:30 a.m., a family reported a 15 year old female who was on campus without permission near Scott Hall. Officers located the girl and notified the Department of Social Services which will investigate. August 19 At 3:40 p.m., several witnesses reported a hit & run accident in front of Stillwell. Vehicle description and plate number were supplied and officers located the suspect vehicle and cited the female operator for the violation. At 11:55 p.m., officers were called to Leatherwood Hall where a student reported that he returned to his room to find an unknown male student passed out on his floor. Officers and Housing staff located the suspect in his own room and found that he was intoxicated and had cut himself. Referred to Student Affairs. At 12:55 a.m., officers found a male student sleeping in a van at Joyner Plaza and advised him that he could not sleep in the vehicle on campus. August 20-22 On 8/20 between 5:40 p.m. and 10:35 p.m., officers referred 10 students to Student Affairs for alcohol violations in and around the residence halls: four at Helder; two at Leatherwood; and, four at Scott. At 12:56 a. m. on 8/21, a female student reported that she was being harassed by a male student in Reynolds Hall. Officers counseled the male student who agreed to leave the victim alone. At 12:57 a. m. on 8/21, a female student reported that she was inappropriately touched by a male on the 3rd floor of Benton Hall. The investigation is continuing. At 8:16 p.m. on 8/21, officers referred a female student to Student Affairs for an alcohol violation in Helder. At 8:58 p.m., a male student in Leatherwood was referred for an alcohol violation. At 9:00 p.m., two male students on the fourth floor of Leatherwood were referred. At 9:20 p.m., one male student on the ground floor of Albright was referred. At 9:26 p.m, one male student in Leatherwood was referred. At 9:30 p.m. three male students in on the 3rd floor of Albright were referred. At 11:45 p.m. on 8/21, officers responded to the 7th floor of Scott where a female student was intoxicated and unresponsive. She awoke when WCU EMS arrived and refused transport. Referred to Student Affairs. At 3:30 a.m. on 8/22, officers learned that several vehicles had been vandalized while parked near the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house at East LaPorte. The Sheriff's Department is investigating. At 11:45 a. m. on 8/22, officers counseled a female student who reported that her car had been vandalized and her purse stolen while she was attending a party at the Sig Ep house on Saturday night. August 23 At 4:00 p.m., officers investigated an accident in the upper UC lot where a vehicle had run into a red kayak which was sticking out of the back of a truck. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
