  • August 18, 1999 FALL SPORTS PREVIEW A9 Cross Country Cross Country Looks to Complete Championship Trifecta by Don Costello Editor-in-Chief Members of the men's and women's cross country teams helped bring the indoor and outdoor conference track championship titles to Cullowhee last year, so the only thing left is for them to do it on their own this fall. That would be nice. The team with the best shot at it this year is the experienced women's cross country team that will be paced by senior Jenny Warfford and junior Jessa Brown. Four freshmen will join the team along with a transfer from the University of Oregon to add depth to a well-experienced field. "Our women's team returns as the most experienced squad we've had in a long time," said head coach Danny Williamson. While WCU has never won a SoCon title in cross country, Williamson admits that the thought of winning the title is "in the back of their mind." He added, "They're very motivated to win all three [championships] in the span of one year." The difference in coaching philosophies in the conference has hampered WCU's effort to win the elusive cross country title. "As far as teams go, usually the winning teams are built around a track program focused mostly on distance runners," said Williamson. "Whereas, we focus more on the entire program." On the men's side, the Cats are fielding their youngest team ever, but one that Williamson admits could turn out to be one of the most talented teams ever after a few years of seasoning. Michael Farmer, the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Year in 1998, will be the team's only returning lettermen. "Most of the group will be new faces, in freshmen, and others who haven't had to step up yet," said Williamson. The cross country teams will begin their quest by hosting the first two events of the season. The Papa's Pizza Invitational and the Catamount Classic will fall on consecutive weekends starting September 4. "It's good to be at home, but early in the season it's not really an advantage because everyone is just looking to get some competition after running against each other in practice," Williamson said. The events will held on the WCU Cross Country course. photo by Don Costello Front row (L-R): Michael Farmer, Sr; Denise Merritt, Jr.; Holly Bright, So.; Shawnta Person, Sr. Back row (L-R): Josh Paris, Jr.; Jenny Lind Warfford, Sr.; Eric Jaeger, Jr.; Christina Smith, So.; Keeya McManus, Sr.; Andy Pruett, So. 1999 Cross Country Schedule Date Event Site Sept. 4 Papa's Pizza Invitational Cullowhee Sept. 11 Catamount Classic Cullowhee Sept. 25 Greensboro Invitational Greensboro Oct. 1 King/Queen of the Mountains Boone Oct. 16 N.C. White, Carr Among Four New Inductees to Athletics Hall of Fame Sports Information Western Carolina University's Athletics Hall of Fame will receive its tenth class on November 6 when three former student- athletes and a former athletics administrator are scheduled for induction. In addition to honoring the new inductees, the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame committee will present a special award to a long time supporter. The 1999 inductees will be officially inducted during a ceremony on Saturday, November 6, on the Ramsey Center concourse and will be introduced to the public later in the day during halftime of the WCU/Samford football game at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. The morning induction ceremony is open to the public. The 1999 class will be, in alphabetical order, Ronnie Carr, a two-time All-Southern Conference basketball player who made the first 3-point field goal in college basketball history; Freddie Hailey, the only baseball player in Southern Conference history to be named all-conference for four seasons; Judy Stroud, an all-star selection in basketball and volleyball in the 1970s and former WCU women's basketball coach; and Steve White, WCU's sports information director and an athletics administrator over four decades. The WCU Athletics Hall of Fame committee's Patron Award will be presented to James B. Childress, owner and operator of WRGC Radio in Sylva and a strong supporter of WCU and its athletics program for five decades. Carr, a product of Orangeburg, SC and currently a resident of Murphy, NC, started in every game in his WCU basketball career and averaged 18 points a game as a outside shooting wing player and scored 20 or more points in nearly half his collegiate games. He is known nationally as the first player to make a 3-point field goal in college basketball history (Nov. 29, 1980 vs Middle Tennessee State). Hailey was an all-star outfielder on WCU's 1984-87 baseball team that won four Southern Conference championships and played in three NCAA tournaments. The Wingate, NC, product is the only Southern Conference baseball player to be named all-conference in each of his four seasons. Stroud, a McDowell County native, started for four seasons on WCU's 1973- 76 women's basketball teams, was a three- year starter on the volleyball court, and later served as the school's head womeni's basketball coach for four seasons. She was selected in 1975 to the World University Games tryouts and was a member of a US A all-star team that played a series of exhibition games with the USSR Olympic team. White began his 33 year association with WCU in 1962 as student sports information director and retired in June, 1999 as associate athletics director and sports information director. In between those dates, the Burke County native handled the school's sports publicity, served as its first athletics fund raiser as executive director of the Big Cat Club (Catamount Club), organized and directed the Catamount Sports Network, and received numerous national publication and writing awards in the process of publicizing Western's teams and student-athletes. The WCU Athletics Hall of Fame Patron's Award is presented periodically to an individual who has had a positive impact on WCU's athletics program through his contributions of leadership and/or unique support off the playing fields and courts. Jimmy Childress built Jackson County's first commercial radio station, WMSJ, in 1957 and immediately became involved with WCU. He has assisted the growth of WCU through several avenues for five decades, including serving as a member of its Board of Visitors, and president of the Development Foundation.
