  • JK^^ western ■• • ^Carolinian UTC Mocs Spike Catamounts by Greg Iredell Welcome back to Wrestling Update. This week's article is dedicated to everyone at the Catamounts Sports Network. On Raw, Stone Cold Steve Austin came to the ring apparently to apologize for his past actions. He went to go hug Vince McMahon and then performed the "stunner." Austin was immediately arrested. Hunter Hearst Helmsly was scheduled to fight Dude Love, but Foley, AKA Mankind/Dude Love, appeared in his old character, Cactus Jack. Jack pinned Helmsly to end this match. After winning over Gold Dust, Brett Hart was attacked by Shawn Micheals. A battle insued that ended up with the Undertaker choke slamming Hart and Micheals at the same time. Awesome. At Fall Brawl, Curt Hennig betrayed the Four Horsemen and seriously injured Rick Flair. Hennig is now NWO. On Nitro, Disco Inferno defeated Alex Wright for the US TV championship. After the match, Jaquelyn came to the ring. Apparently those two were supposed to wrestle but Inferno refused to wrestle a woman. Hogan is now wearing Flair's gown o the ring. If this symbolizes Flair's re- 'l"!ment then I don't like the way the WCW is headed. The next NCW event is at Bailey's Pretty soon. Be sure to attend and look ,or me, I haven't missed one yet. Be sure to read Update next week wien I have coverage ofthe upcoming Pay per views and a preview of the next ocal NCW event. Questions and comments are always welcome. by Daniel Hooker The Western Carolina Catamount Volleyball team dropped an emotional home conference match to the tough University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Moccasins Sunday in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd in Reid Gym. The Catamounts dropped the first two matches, 13-15, then rallied to win the third match, 15-13. In the end, they lost a vigorous match, 7-15, to yield to the preseason Southern Conference favorites, the Lady Mocs. With the loss, the Cats drop to 3-8 overall, 2-1 in conference play, while UTC advances to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in conference. Despite the loss, the Catamounts still lead the all-time series 22-14. The first game set the pace for the entire match. With many mini-runs, the two teams scrapped back and forth. At 8-6 WCU, the Mocs went on a 5-0 run to open the game up. Despite great play and hustle by junior Elisabeth Smith and sophomore Jessi Fick, the Moccasins took the first match. Through the first game, the Catamounts had 18 kills. "We struggled a little bit. They hustled and played tough," offered Tennessee-Chattanooga coach Lisa Rhodes, the 1996 Southern Conference Coach ofthe Year. "They did a great job and really out hustled us tonight." In the second game, the two squads struggled, entailing several side-outs and service breaks before the Cats scratched the scoreboard. From that point, Western looked very strong, taking a 5-2 lead on a 4-0 run. Yet, the talented UTC team countered with a run of its own that gave the Mocs the lead. Sophomore Emily Sutton from Cary, N.C, had several key kills to set up the Cats' run. With sophomore star Shannon Sweeney serving, the Catamounts mounted a dramatic yet unsuccessful run to cut the Moc lead, but dropped the second game at the identical score of 13-15. In the third game, Western used 26 kills and several aces on serves to outlast the Mocs in an emotional series that left the Reid gym crowd screaming for more. Senior Tara Chadwick and junior Keeya McManus had several successful digs and taps back over the net, leaving the Mocs' middle blockers spralled out on the floor in disbelief. With their backs against the wall, the Cats rallied to win 15-13, forcing a fourth game. Carrying the momentum from the previous game victory, the Cats appeared to have all ofthe answers. However, a controversial call with the score 3-2 UTC changed everything. Following the much-disputed out-of- bounds call, which left the crowd in disbelief, the Mocs went on a 11-0 run that took all of the air out of the Catamounts' sails. Despite the odds being stacked against them, being down 10-2, the Lady Cats mounted a 5-0 run led by the serving of Shannon Sweeney, but came up just short. Sophomore Ramsey Herron of Greensboro, N.C, played well for the Cats. After the game, she commented on the youth of the WCU team, which only loses one senior. "We look really strong and we're doing so many things that we've never done before. We are still getting better everyday," said Herron. Following the match, first-year coach Michelle Hansen appeared disappointed about the emotional loss. Yet, as the old adage goes, Cats always land on their feet. With this in mind, Hansen and the Lady Cats looked to rebound against Wofford Tuesday night in Reid Gym. Results were unavailable at press time. On September 26, the Cats will travel to the College of Charleston to compete in the College of Charleston Invitational. The Sports Network Division I-AA College Football Poll for September 22, 1997.
