  • inian University to Upgrade Nutrition Awareness Counselor to be Hired in the Summer news MayS, 1999 by Don Costello Managing Editor and Rick Patel Contributing Writer In an effort to increase nutrition awareness among students, the office of Student Affairs and the Department of Health Sciences will be hiring a registered dietitian to counsel students and teach nutrition classes. "Nutrition is not the most important thing on students' minds," said Dr. Kathryn Hosig, coordinator of WCU's Nutrition and Dietetics Program. "It goes from one extreme to the other with students who watch everything they eat to those that eat whatever they can put past their mouth," Hosig said. Concerns about nutrition, especially eating disorders, have come to the forefront lately as widespread problems face college students, Hosig said. She remarked that many of these problems arise from the time of transition that students go through when they move away from home and have to make nutrition choices on their own. "Unfortunately, those students who watch everything they eat have a disorder," said Hosig. Hosig said that these disorders do not necessarily stem from a health standpoint, but from an attractiveness standpoint. Another problem Hosig alluded to is students waking up and heading straight to class without eating. "Research shows you learn better with food on you stomach," she said. "[These students] are decreasing their ability to learn and do well on tests." The duties of the new nutrition instructor will be to counsel students with eating disorders and work with WCU's Aramark Food Services to increase awareness of proper nutrition. The instructor will serve on the Food Service Advisory Committee comprised of Aramark officials and other on-campus instructors. In the April 5 edition of The Reporter, the WCU faculty and staff newsletter, Bill Haggard, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs, said the funding for the new position will come mostly from student fees. Haggard added that "addressing total health" will become the emphasis of on- campus health service instead of the traditional clinical approach to wellness. The new nutrition counselor is part of this effort. Currently, only two full-time faculty members with Ph.D.'s in the Health Sciences department are on staff at Western and, according to Hosig, these two are not able to handle the need of the students in terms of nutrition counseling. What can students without disorders do to improve their nutritional choices? "There are some healthy choices on campus but you have to work to find them," Hosig said. Ronn Orr, Aramark's production manager, said "Students at Western are not the typical 'junk food' type of consumers. They prefer a homestyle meal." Aramark, in an attempt to offer more healthy choices, has opened Cranberry Farms, which is similar to a Boston Market Aramark has approached the Nutrition and Dietetic Student Association to see if they would be interested in charting the calories and fat per serving for food in the cafeterias. Those could be posted as early as the end of the fall semester. A GOOD WITfS SLEEP AHEAP OF THE REST!! 847 No. Main St. Waynesviile, NC 28786 Gerry Wood (828) 454-0222 CREEK FORUM Results of Greek Week 1999 by Erin Hunt Contributing Writer The Western Carolina University 1999 Greek Week event was held April 26, 1999 through May 1, 1999. The goal of Greek Week was to demonstrate all Greek pride and spirit, to introduce Greek life to unaffiliated students, and to help support the community through service projects. This year, $400 was raised for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation during the TJ and Joel "Friendship in the Age of AIDS" program held on Monday. Also throughout the week, Greeks raised $1315.98, which was donated to both the Humane Society and Headstart, both of Jackson County. On Saturday, 100 Greeks painted and cleaned the inside of the Sylva Church of Christ daycare center in Sylva and over 100 Greeks participated in the March of Dimes walk through downtown. Congratulations to the 1999 Greek Week winners: Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Chi. We would also like to thank all participating Greek organizations and faculty members, who made this year's Greek Week a success! Greek Week Results Grades Panhellenic IFC 1. Alpha Gamma Delta 1.
