  • 8 IBs 99 9m Vpl SS mk Sports Year-e May 5, IS A Historic Year by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Perhaps the biggest underlying goal of any athletics team at Western Carolina is to Beat App. Yet, in this last year before the Y2K bug is supposed to erase records from computers worldwide, the Cata mounts wanted to break some of those records before they could get lost. Football At the beginning of the season, the 1997 starting quarterback, Shawn Snyder sprained his ankle. Following the game in Charleston versus The Citadel, he was lost for the season with torn ligaments and a broken fibula in his left ankle. It was then that another transfer, sophomore Justin Cella, took over the offense. The Catamounts finished with a 6-5 overall record, the first winning season for WCU since 1994. Included in that winning record was a thrilling double-overtime victory over East Tennessee State, a great game (despite the loss) to the then- number one team in Division I-AA football, Georgia Southern, and who could forget the DISMANTLING of the Boone Goons. 23-7, in front of 13,000+ fans, and a regional television audience. w '"TO WtUVLVNW 'J/Y(€xJ&&Z&> SALES Over 1OO Bikes in Stock Choose from: A Wide Assortment of Repair Parts, Bicycle Components, & Tools at Prices Comparable to Catalogs. This pair of juniors awed crowds all year. Hoover broke the school's single-season rushing mark with 1,663 yards, and broke the single-game record with his 250 yard performance against VMI. Eric Johnson (for more commentary, see baseball) led this year's defense with 118 tackles, 82 of which were solo. He was also named the Southern Conference's Defensive Player-of-the-Year. Volleyball Head Coach Michelle Hansen's second year at the helm of the Catamount Volleyball team was one of the most successful in WCU history. The 1998 Volleyball Cats finished 23-13, with a 15-6 conference mark. For the second-straight year, the WCU was the Southern Conference Tournament Runner-up. The Cats also SWEPT the Lady Boonei Goons 6-0 in two matches this season, ending the 15-game winless skid. Other records by this year's team included a 21- game win streak that spanned seven matches and 10 days, placing it third on the school's history list. Men's Basketball Equipped with nine new faces on the court, the Catamounts struggled this season. But with the nation's toughest early- season schedule, including the likes of Maryland, Arkansas, Clemson, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, one can see why. With a final record of 8-21, it would be easy to dwell on the negatives. After the gutsy showing by the Cats in the Southern Conference Tournament, 1999-2000 has great promise. Western doesn't lose a single member of this year's team, as Dondrell Whitmore will return for a fifth-year of eligibility. Casey Rogers, who was named the Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year, will return to lead the point. Women's Basketball First-year head coach, Jill Dunn, and her all-new coaching staff worked hard to turn the 7-20 1997-98 Lady Catamounts into the 12-16, eye-opening Lady Cats of 1998-99. Several records and skids were broken by this year's team. Dunn compiled the most wins (12) by a WCU first-year coach, most conference wins ever with nine, and became the first, WCU first-year coach to win a Southern Conference Tournament game, ending the Lady Cats seven-year drought in that category. Even after losing three seniors in Beth Currence, Tamara McMahon, and Amber Wheeler, the returning nucleus of Willow Russell, Tameka Parks, Laura Echols, Amy Proffitt, and April Fleck will help the Lady Cats to more records in 1999-2000.
