Registration facts revealed By COLLIER SMITH NEWS EDITOR There are many processes involved in registration at Western Carolina University of which the average student is unaware, according to Miss Ad- die Beam, Registrar. One week after midterm of each quarter, the opportunity to pre-register for courses is offered to students at WCU. To pre-register, a student must pick up a Course Request Form and three Personal Data Cards from the materials table on the mezzaine of Bird Aimiiis- tration Building. After selecting courses, with the help of his faculty advisor from the list of courses offered, the stu- dent then proceeds to the Registrar's Office, where he presents his completed Course Request Form and three Personal Data Cards. At this time, the student receives his registration packet, which includes his Permit to Register, Student Fes Card, and Student Directory Card. For the time being, the student's job is over. The Registrar's office and the Computer Center don't even stop to breathe. Before Course Request Forms are available, heads of various departments at WCU must decide on courses to be offered. After Course Request Forms are turned in by students during pre-registration, the computer center makes a tally of the number of students requesting each course offered. From this taUy faculty and de- _l STUDENTS class schedules. FLOCK partment heads determine the number of sections of a course to be offered. This information is returned to the computer center and used in making up a conflict matrix, which shows class time conficcs, The conflict matrix is studied by d3- partment heads, and courses are rearranged accordingly. After the master time class schedule has been finalized by the department heads, trial scheduling computer runs are begun. Eighty-five per cent of the schedules for pre-regis- tered students are rejected, the master time class schedule must be reworked, and a trial scheduling run is made again. If aU goes well, final schedule Breese Gym to pick up runs are made, The pre-registered student has only to pay his fees in or- der to receive his class schedule. He may do so by mail and receive his schedule before leaving WCU for quarter- break. Or, he may pay his fees on regular registration day, after quarter break, and pick up his schedule from the Registrar's office. It'sas simple as that. The student who does not pre- register faces a longer and more frustrating process of registration. First, he must clear his admission and have his Permit to Register stamped accordingly. Then, he must CONTINUED Page 3. . . . Billy Stewart, scheduled to appear Friday night, January 39, died recently in an automobile accident, A replacement will be named later this week. Two movies, to be shown in Hoey at 7i30 p. m. on Tuesday, January 27, and Friday, January 30, and a dance, featuring The Huckleberry Mudflap, Sat urday, January 31, round out the events of WCU's first Winter Festival, Festival schedule Monday, January 26 WCU vs. Baptist College 8:00 p.m,, Reid Gym Tuesday, January 27 "A Countess from Hong Kong Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando 7:30 p. m., Hoey Auditorium Wednesday, January 28 Jerry Butler Concert 8:00 p. m., Reid Gym Thursday, January 29 Archie B,:ll and The Drells Show and Dance 8:00 p. m , Reid Gym Friday, January 30 "Born Free" 7:30 p, m. , Hoey Auditorium Saturday, January 3i WCU vs. Elon 8:00 p. m. Reid Gym The Hucklebeery Mudflap 9:00 p. m., Grandroom, Univer- sity Center A message from Ways ana Means This has been the first opportunity of the Ways and Means Committee to report to the students on the progress of the Thirty-Fifth Pre-Session Conference recommendations. The Committee is currently work- ing on the implementation of all 247 recommendations. The recommendations range from athletics to academics, and voice the concerns of the entire Student Body as expressed by Student Leaders this past September. Since this time it has been our duty to initiate these recommendations into the proper channels. The implementation of these recommendations has been a joint effort between students, faculty, and administration. Members of the Committee were assigned to see various administrative officials concerning specific recommendations which pertained to their area of ad- ministration, Fall and part of Winter quarter have been spent in initial meetings with these officials. Reception to these recommendations have been varied from fast response to avoidance of action, The efficiency demonstrated by Dr. Pow in the initial guidelines for implmentation has not fuUilled full expectations due to the amount of secondhand knowledge and lack of uniformity in information compiled, However, this method can succeed with increased co-operation on behalf of all concerned. There must be a change from vague responses to positive action within the few remaining weeks preceding Mid-Session Conference. The above does not infer lack of progress because many recommendations HAVE gone into effect. However, the Committee feels that in order to stimulate expediency, the complexities of the progress must be simplified to direct positive action. Looking optimistically, we think that many of these recommendations can and will be accomplished by the end of the year if necessary changes are made, Sincerely, Jim Pope, Chairman Ways and Means Committee
