Yes, it's spring, and with spring comes the event that movie fans across the country anticipate for a calendar year. Of course, you are probably thinking Oscar, but that wiener has choked its last eager participant. No, what I'm referring to is (of course) the First Annual Movie Guy Awards, to be handed out at some point in the future on a local access cable network to be named at a later date. Oddly enough, CBS, NBC and ABC all turned me down when I contacted them concerning^ possible Oscar competitor. FOX accepted, but told me that the World's Most Dangerous Fisheries would get the nod if I couldn't get some star power. Don Knotts has yet to return my calls. Since these are my awards, I feel no obligation whatsoever to use the same nominees for my award categories that the Oscar guy chose. In other words, don't look at the actors and actresses I pick as the best and expect them to even be nominated when you sit down to watch the Oscars. I also want to make sure everyone understands that for me to choose a film as Best Picture, it doesn't have to be three hours long, and to win an a Movie Guy award for actor or actress, you don't have to meet your demise in the film. I'm very impressed by survivors, as I tend to associate better with the living. That being said, let's begin with my pick for Best Supporting Actor. Actually, let's call this the "Award for the Less Important Male," as this is usually the case. The nominees are as listed on the next page. My winner: Bill Murray for his outstanding performance as the miserable steel contractor Herman Blume in "Rushmore," the latest comedy from Wes Anderson, who won a lot of acclaim for his first film, "Bottle Rocket." Murray is simply perfect in the role of the lonely bully. Many people are saying that this is the part which will redefine his film career. I say it just broadens an already wonderful array of roles which Murray has amassed. In the category of Less Important Female, I have to go with Shelley Long for her work in last year's quirky comedy, "HomeFries." Long gives her best performance since her shrieking turn as a housewife married to an ax murderer in the classic 'The Shining." This was a very heated * battle with a lot of support going for Sharon Stone for her excellent portrayal of an ant in last fall's "ANTZ." The category of Most Important Male gave me fits. I must have lost at least five minutes of sleep worrying about just who would win this coveted MGA. In the end, it came down to a tight race between George Clooney for "Out of Sight" and Jason Schwartzman for "Rushmore." My Winner: George Clooney for his portrayal of bank robber Jack Foley in "Out of Sight." The winner of the Most Important Female Award was a much easier choice than any other category. Obviously, Gillian Anderson wins the award hands down for her masterful portrayal of FBI agent Dana Scully in "The X-Files: Fight the Future." Need I say more? The award for Best Picture was almost as easy as the award for Most Important Female. I say almost because I had a few second thoughts after casting my vote. Should the winner be the much acclaimed and quite enjoyable "Shakespeare in Love?" Or should the award go to the one and only "Rushmore?" On one hand, you've got Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Affleck, Geoffrey Rusch, Judi Dench, and a script from Tom Stoppard. On the other hand you have Bill Murray. Winner: "Rushmore." Hands down. I am willing to bet that many of you are reading this article and wondering where all those highly acclaimed films that the Academy nominated happen to be. Well, it's a funny thing, these movie awards. I can't in good faith give out an award to a film I haven't had the chance to see. Now, I did see "Saving Private Ryan." I just think it was a mediocre film that was over hyped. That's why I didn't nominate it for anything. But as I was saying, I missed several good films this year, which is why I invented the next award. The winner of the Best Picture I Didn't See Award is "Affliction." I give the award to "Affliction" for two reasons. One, it was adapted from a novel by Russell Banks, who is a wonderful author. Second, it's a fun word to say. Try it yourself - AFFLICTION...sounds painful, doesn't it!?' The last award on the Movie Guy Award Spectacular is, of course, the most see 'Awards' page 9 Unsure about picking a major? $$$ Need a minor $$$ to help yourjob prospects?
