Sams News Editor Katie Koestner, a nationally recognized speaker on sexual assault, will be here on Monday, March 1, in the UC Grandroom for a "He-said, She-said" session. Koestner appeared on the cover of Time magazine after going public with her own personal story of acquaintance rape in 1990. HBO also make a documentary on her story, "No Visible Bruises." Koestner has spoken at 450 colleges, high schools, conferences, and military institutions since 1994. Koestner will begin her day at WCU by meeting with the Chancellor's task force on Sexual Assault to review policies and guidelines at 1:00 pm. From 3 pm until 5 pm, Koestner will hold a general session titled "He-said, She-said," and will then have a dinner with student leaders at 5:30 pm. At 8 pm Monday night, she will a hold a women-only meeting in the Blue Room of Scott Dorm, entitled "No Visible Bruises." Dr. Bill Haggard, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, stated that the decision to bring Koestner to WCU was made after several sorority members saw her speak at the Southeastern Panhellenic Council and requested that she come to WCU. Haggard hopes that Koestner's time at WCU will raise awareness and educate students on acquaintance rape. The services will be Monday- Wednesday, March 1-3, beginning at 7:00 pm. Monday's service will be held in the UC Grand Room and Tuesday and Wednesday's services will be held in the sanctuary of the Cullowhee Presbyterian Church behind Dotson. This year's key note speaker will be the Reverend Doctor Sir Walter Mack. Mack is the pastor of New Hope Granville Baptist Church in Oxford, NC, and is also the Campus Minister at North Carolina Central University. He holds degrees from Elon College, Duke University, and United Theological Seminary. Rich Irwin, Campus Minister of the Wesley Foundation said, "Dr. Mack is a very powerful preacher that you will not want to miss." There will also be an African-American trio from Winston-Salem called Healing Force. The trio is comprised of a mother, father, and daughter who have performed across the state and region. Healing Force brings with them story telling and traditional African music. They will be performing on Monday and Tuesday nights. The WCU Inspirational Choir will perform on Wednesday night. Other campus ministries will be participating in the service each night. Irwin said, "This is important because we have a tendency to separate ourselves from each other and this event allows us to come together to share our faith." During the services there will be an opportunity to give to Southern Appalachian Building Aid (S.A.B.A.) each evening. There will be a 24-hour prayer vigil on Saturday, February 27, in preparation for this event. For more information about the prayer vigil or U*N*I Praise, contact Rich Irwin at 293-9214. The fifth annual Walk for Women will begin the alumni belltower at noon on Monday, March 1, prior to Katie Koestner's 3pm presentation on prevention of sexual assualt.
