  • iinian Snakebit Cats Lose 2 in SoCon by Don Costello Managing Editor "Are we snakebit, or what?" Those were the words of WCU coach Phil Hopkins Monday night after the Cats fell to Wofford 90-85, Western's fourth straight loss. But no doubt, the Cats played well enough to win. Western shot 54 percent from the field, including a 61 percent performance in the second half, but was unable to overcome a Wofford offense that slithered through the Cats defense. Every time the Cats would take a lead or pull close to Wofford, the Terriers would answer with a three-pointer. "It was not what you could call a defensive contest," Wofford coach Richard Johnson said following his team's performance that netted 15-of-23 second half shots to hold off a feisty Catamount team.- The Terriers' Ian Chadwick unleashed his venom with a career performance against the Catamounts, tallying 39 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 6-of-10 from three- point land. "We tried everything in the world to stop Chadwick," Hopkins said. "We switched defensively. We pressured. We zoned. We eventually shut him down." When the Cats shut down Chadwick, his teammate Donald Davis stepped in and scored all 19 of his points in the second half. - "This is as tough as it gets," said Casey Rogers, who was donning a protective mask in his second game back after breaking his nose against Georgia Southern. "Chadwick's just a good player and when a good player's shots keep falling it's hard to stop." Senior forward Dondrell Whitmore tied a career-high with 24 points and set a new career mark with 14 rebounds. "We went out expecting to win," said Whitmore. "It didn't work out the way we planned." Western's record now stands at 6-17, with a 2-11 record in the Southern Conference. The Cats are in sixth place in the SoCon's North division. Saturday, against the Furman Paladins, the Cats ran into the same problems that occurred against Wofford. Every time WCU would close on Furman, they would w =EI Siflvas Own!! Furrrian was able to keep the Catamount offense out of the post, holding big men Michael Green and Colin Kearns to a combined five points. Green and Kearns each fouled out. The loss to Furman was Casey Rogers' first game back at the point guard spot since the injury. He came up with 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists. As good as the Cats' shooting against Wofford was, it was that bad against Furman. Western shot an atrocious 38 percent against the Paladins. The Catamounts are on the road this weekend.
