news February 10,1999 Cawilnlan Open House Scheduled for February 20 OPI Prospective students and their families will have an opportunity find out what college life is all about when Western Carolina University holds Open House on Saturday, February 20. Hosted by WCU's Admissions Office, Open House gives students and their parents a chance to explore the campus, visit residence halls, classrooms and the library, and even sample cafeteria cuisine. Also, WCU faculty members will be on hand to discuss academic opportunities and career interests. The day's events will begin at 9:00 a.m. with registration and an information fair in the Ramsey Regional Activity Center. Following a welcome by WCU representatives, students and their parents will visit academic departments. Guided tours of campus will be given and lunch will be available in the cafeteria. For reservations or more information, call the Admissions Office at (828) 227- 7317, or toll free at (800) 928-2369. Former National Cancer Institute Director and Director of Center for Biothermics to Join Venter at Symposium 'Genome' cont. from page 1 potential rewards both scientific and lucrative. Participating with Venter in the symposium, "Decoding the Human Genome: Applications and Implications," are Arthur Caplan, director of the Center for Bioeth- ics at the University of Pennsylvania, and Sam Broder, former director of the National Cancer Institute, and executive vice president/chief medical officer at Celera Genomics. Broder, National Cancer Institute director from 1989-1995, is expected to discuss pharmacological aspects of the genome research, while Caplan will address social and ethical issues. All three speakers are expected to take part in a panel discussion and question-and- answer session. The day long symposium is designed as an examination of perhaps the most significant undertaking in the history of modern medicine, said Claire Eldridge, WCU vice chancellor for advancement and external affairs, who is developing the symposium to appeal to the scientific and medical professions, as well as the social sciences, humanities and business communities. Would you like to: HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON CAMPUS? GET A GREAT JOB AFTER GRADUATION? BE KNOWN AS A LEADER??? Desk or call 7206 for details Continental breakfast included www.crossroads-sylva.com Dining and Entertainment Sylua, n.C. Opening Soon! Stay in Tune. Support the Arts "The general public should find the discussion extremely relevant to the issues of the new millennium," Eldridge said. Once the sequence of the human genome is discovered, it could unleash a medical revolution, as scientists may be able to use the information to cure a myriad of diseases (HIV, cancer, heart disease, diabetes), "grow" human organs for transplant, even reset the genetic "clock" that causes cells to age. Some also worry that deciphering the human genome will lead to such developments as human cloning and "designer babies," where parents can select the eye color, personality, IQ and other characteristics of their children prior to conception. Closer to Venter's visit, Carolinian staff writer Alex Esmon, a biology major, will do take an in-depth look at the impact Venter has had on the process of mapping the human genome. For more information about the upcoming symposium at Western, contact the Office of Advancement and External Affairs at telephone (828) 227-3039, fax number (828) 227-7424, or via e-mail (hlee@wcu.edu).
