Even though the teams both finished at 18-6 in the conference, Western will be the number one seed in tomorrow's Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston, S.C, by virtue of their 2-1 mark against the Eagles in head-to-head competition. In the first of a double header on Saturday, it was all offense and no defense as the Bucs and Cats combined for 17 runs and 4 errors. Western got going quickly in the bottom half of the first inning as Alex Tolbert's single to right scored Jeremy Bruce from second. Chris Moore scored on a sacrifice fly one batter later after drawing a walk earlier in the inning. Things sailed along pretty smoothly until the fourth, when the two teams went on a scoring spree. Each team scored one run in the fourth as ETSU's Jody Jenkins led off the inning with a double and then came around to score two batters later on grounder to second base by Brandon Eierman. The Cats also picked up one run in the fourth on an RBI single off the bat of Matt Stillwell that scored Tolbert. Western held the Bucs in the fifth and then ex ploded in the bottom half of that inning for three runs to forge a comfortable 6-1 lead. Chris Moore crushed a two-run shot over the left field fence, his eight of the year, and Tolbert scored his third run of the day on a single by Dave McKay with two outs. Just when the Cats thought they were in good shape, ETSU came up with their own big inning. In the top of the sixth the Bucs scored four runs on two hits, one of which was a three-run homer from designated hitter Britt Phelps. Two batters later, Shane Benner slapped a solo shot to left field, only his fifth round-tripper of the season. Just like that the Bucs were within one run at 6- 5: After being blanked in the bottom of the sixth, ETSU was back to do more damage. Two walks to start the inning would prove to be a huge mistake. Jenkins singled in Shannon Carter, who scored from second, and then Phelps smacked a hot shot to second base to score A.J. Polichnowski. East Tennessee suddenly found themselves leading 7-6, but that would not last long. Western made one final push that put it over the top in the bottom of the seventh. Bruce started the inning off right with his 13th homer of the year, and then the cats got some help from the Buccaneer defense as Moore reached safely on fielding error. With two on and one out, McKay picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to right field, scoring Moore. Tolbert scored the final run of the inning and gave the Cats just enough to win on a balk by ETSU pitcher Chris Skidmore.. The Bucs did add one run, in the eight, but could not scratch in the ninth as they came up om the short end of a 9-8 final score. Catamount reliever Chris: Waters (4-2) got the victory for his three and a third innings of work. Waters struck out five batters and walked only two. ETSU starter Richie White absorbed the loss for the Bucs, dropping his record to 5-4. White gave up 11 hits and four walks in six innings on the hill. Jeremey Bruce helped his conference leading hitting average by going three for five with a home run. Matt Stillwell also had a good game as he went three for tour with one RBI and a stolen base. Tolbert and McKay also had two hits each. In the second game of the Saturday double-header, ETSU again came up just short after a furious rally in the final inning that produced seven runs. However, the Bucs could not keep the Cats from breaking the tie and scoring the winning run with two outs in the final inning. Western appeared to be on cruise control as they entered the seventh and final inning with a huge 10-3 lead, but the Bucs had other plans. ETSU got two hits, a walk, and hit bats men to score the first of seven runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Wagner then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Byrd. Three straight singles and a walk scored the next four runs for the Bucs, and Shane Benner tacked on one more run as he scored on a fileder's choice. With all of a seven-run lead gone and the game tied at ten with only the Catamount half of the seventh left to play, it was time for a gut check for Western. The inning got off to a bit of a bizarre start as Chris Moore struck out yet managed to reach first because of a wild pitch on the third strike. To make things worse for East Tennessee, Moore then advanced to second on a throwing error as the catcher tried to gun the runner out at first. After a wild pitch sandwiched between two intentional walks, the Catamounts had the bases loaded with one out and the game hanging in the balance. But it did not hang for long, as Moore scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to right field by Frankie Ward. David Pember (2-2) got the victory for the Cats and Ismael Olvera (1-4) absorbed the loss for the Bucs. Tolbert and Moore each had three hits and Bruce, Ward, Stillwell, and Jeff Sziksai all had two each. Both hits for Ward were doubles as he piled up five RBI. In the final game on Sunday, home runs by J.P. Burwell, Matt Stillwell, and Frankie Ward powered the Cat attack to an 8-6 victory and a share of the conference title. The biggest hit of the three was definitely the grand slam by Burwell with no Intramurals SUMMER INTRAMURAL PORTS PROGRAMS will b provided for 1997. Until the blast heard round Cullowhee, the game was actually very close with the Cats up by a slim 3-2 margin. After WCU's big inning, the Bucs did make a little noise in the eighth, scoring three runs on one hit, but the Cats put the icing on the cake on a lead-off homer by Frankie Ward in the bottom half of the eight to give the Catamounts a three-run lead they would not relinquish. Jeremey Bruce was two for four at the plate and Jeff Sziksai was two for three. Four other WCU hitters had one hit and Stillwell had two RBIs on his round tripper in the second inning. Western Carolina starter Brian Davidson (5-4) got the win for the cats as he scattered seven hits over seven and one thirds innings of work. Davidson also had six strike-outs. Donnie Suttles picked up his third save of the year. ETSU starter Justin Snow (3-5) picked up the loss for the Bucs. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in seven innings. Western Carolina will now begin the quest for its first conference tournament title since 1993. The Cats will be the number one seed and will begin tournament play at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Joseph P.
