November 27, 1948 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page Three The Western Carolina Catamounts brought their football season to an end last Saturday sight by playing Carson-Newman at Morris- town, Tenn. Squad members are, from left to right, front row: Ovie Heavener, Boyce Winchester, Harry Duke, Ned Noblitt, E. F. Stewart, Max Clayton, Stewart Brown, Brady Thomas, Tommy Selzer, Bob Ilderton. Second row: Line Coach "Tuck" McConnell, Frann Hardin, Clark Pennell, Max Beam, Elmo Neal, Clayton Everhart, Paul Rogers, Lawrence Arney, Bob Tate, Mace Brown, and Coach Tom Young. Third row: Jay Hooper, Ralph Humphries, Jack Allison, Hugh Constance, Jack Arrington, George Nims, Cecil Roberts, Ralph McConnell, and Dan Donovan. Four members of the team, Ott Byrd, "Buffalo" Humphries, Dan Robinson, and "PeeWee" Hamilton, made North State Conference this year. Cats Bow To Carson-Newman The Catamounts of Western Carolina finished their 1948 season last Saturday night at Mor- ristown, Tenn., by bowing to the Carson-Newman college Eagles 14-13. Statistics on the Carson-Newman game favor Western Carolina by a landslide, but the thing that counts is the score, and that went to Carson-Newman. Both teams played good, hard football through the first half with neither side scoring until the last play o fthe second quarter. Western Carolina had the ball on their own 17. Cecil Roberts fell back to pass but three Eagles hit him on the five, and knocked the ball out of his hand. The pigskin rolled into the end zone and was pounced upon by Paul Whaley, big Carson- Newman tackle, for a touchdown. Fred Woolwine booted the ball for the extra point and the Eagles a 7-0 halftime lead, Statistics: WCTC C-N First downs 14 4 Yds, gained rush,, net 316 129 Passes attempted 12 3 Passes completed 3 2 Yds. gained passing 49 21 Passes interc. by - 1 3 Yds. gained pass intc. 37 38 Punting average 31.7 48.1 Yds. kicks returned 21 0 Oppo fumbles recvd. 2 2 Yds. lost by penalty 30 15 Cats Wallop Wasps In walloping Emory & Henre, Saturday, Nov. 13, 32 to 13 the Catamounts fully avenged themselves for the 7-7 tie that they* were held to last season by the Wasps. m In downing the Wasps the Catamounts lost no time in starting. Early in the opening quarter, in fact, on the third play of the game, Max Beam recovered an Emory and Henry fumble on the Wasps' 34 and in nine rushing plays Cecil Roberts and Ralph McConnell had the ball resting on the five. Then Roberts went over for the score and a 6 to 0 lead. Early in the second quarter the Catamounts scored again when they drove the ball from their own 45 to E&H's 32 from where Pee Wee Hamilton circled the end and scored standing up. Before the half ended the Wasps w re back in the ball game. Taking advantage of a bad Catamount kick that went out on W. C.'s 24, I they drove the ball to the two from where Cyphers drove over for a TD that brought the score up up to 12-6, and that's the way the first half ended. However, on the first scrimmage play of the second half, Paul Monroe, a very determined Catamount fullback, tore the Emory & Henry line to shreds as he smashed through it and stepped off 70 yards for a touchdown straight down the middle. Frank Hardin converted from placement to give the Cats a 19-6 lead. Yet the lead held for only a few minutes. Midway in that same period, Emory and Henry took over on their own 46 and Painter passed to Kiser to the 35 and Kiser ran the remaining distance to the endzone. Poppin converted to pull the Wasps back dangerously close to the Cats, 19-13. On the third play of the fourth, quarter Paul Rogers spun through the line for 20 yards and another Catamount touchdown. Hardin converted. Later in the quarter Pee Wee Hamilton passed to Clyde Etheridge from the 15 for the last Catamount TD. This one was set up by a recovered fumble by Von Ray Harris on the 15. There was no individual standout in this game, as everyone played a bang-up ball game. And, if you see a couple of guys, one with his leg carefully draped over his left shoulder and the other guy twisted into a perfect "U", there is need no need to worry; they are only wrestling. The wrestling team is newly organized. The instructor is Jack Arney and you can rest assured that he puts his team through the rough. Wrestling really isn't as simple as it appears. It takes weeks of training to get those lazy muscles working properly; so, it is necessary to work out often at the gym. The wrestlers jump, climb ropes, twist on bars, run, and tumble. Returning lettermen Don Thames and Jack McCracken were elect- co-captains of the 1948-49 team. Other lettermien returning ttfiis year are David Bird and Bozo Burleson. The grapplers have their first match of the season December 7, when they meet the strong Appalachian State Teachers' team. Compliments of BUCK'S SODA SHOP HALE'S The Store for Women Sylva, N. C.
