"PARKING" CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 universities don't even let freshmen bring cars on campus." Any student who has a complaint can visit McAbee in his office at the field house. Though he has little authority over the matter, he is willing to listen to student comments. McAbee points out that the SGA has a Traffic Court that deals with many parking concerns, including ruling for or against fellow students who have been charged with violations. The rules of parking on campus are not made by Public Safety or the SGA. The WCU Board of Trustees governs over all traffic rules and regulations. They decide where the freshmen can park, when new lots are to be made, and when old lots will be repaved. However, the money that Public Safety draws from citation revenues does have something to do with the improvement of parking on campus. "We don't rely on parking tickets to balance our budget," says McAbee. Instead, that money goes into a Traffic Auxiliary Trust Fund. Money from the fund "can only be used for repairs, constructions and administering the parking system," McAbee reports. So, how has all this money been spent, and how will it be used in the future? This past summer, $300,000 was spent on re- paving lots and driveways. The driveway to the hill area and the field house lot was repaved, and the Scott, Brown, and Bird building lots all received some minor repairs and restructuring. McAbee has mixed thoughts on how to solve WCU's parking dilemma. "It would be great to have [more parking], but you gotta have the land," he says. He adds that though Western has space available for parking in some of the intramural fields, "not everyone will agree to infringing on the greens." Two areas that are being looked at right now are Camp Lab and the land set aside for the new Performing Arts Center. "I would like to see as many as three hundred new spaces created near the Preforming Arts Center," says McAbee. These spaces are being considered for commuters, which would free up some spaces used by commuters now. Camp Lab may or may not offer new parking opportunities, as university officials are not yet sure what they want to do with that land. Students have other ideas for parking; some suggest double-decker lots. McAbee notes, "Western has the lowest parking and registration fees within the university system, at $17 per vehicle. Building and maintaining such lots would cause that number to rise to well over $100." Another idea, proposed by many hill-area residents, is to convert the old tennis courts between the water tower and Robertson into parking spaces. "You can hardly find a spot up here," says David Whiteheart, a junior. "I've always said they need to bulldoze the tennis courts and make more parking." Brian Edlin, a senior, pleads, "Do something with those dilapidated tennis courts! Either bulldoze or renovate, but do something, for God's sake!" McAbee replies, "Only fifteen or twenty spaces would be made" from repaving of the tennis courts. "I suggested that [idea] eight or nine years ago," he stated. "It just isn't a high priority of the university." <?n Introducing WCU On-line provided by campusMCI'- - *$14.9S M0/7S HRS ■ FREE CRUISIN 1AM 6 AM DIRECT CAMPUS CONNECTION - SOFTWARE INCLUDED What Do You Mean You haven't Ordered Yet?^* CALL 1-800-821-5624 *Up to 75 hours of local access.
