SHEPPARD CAMPUS LIFE EDITOR The WCU Wellness Program strives to make WCU a healthy community through programs designed to help the individual achieve at optimal wellness, according to Carla Cosio, Wellness Director. The Wellness Program offers workshops, health screenings, personal consultations, awareness events, wellness presentations, smoking cessation classes, and an exercise club. Three workshops will be presented by the Wellness Program this fall. The Massage and Yoga workshops are full and the Wellness Program is considering offering them again next semster because of the positive response. A massage workshop will be presented on September 23 and 30 in Killian 104 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The focus of the workshop will focus on shoulder, neck, and back massage. A Yoga class will begin on September 24 and conclude on December 3. The class will help participants reduce stress and increase their energy. The Wellness Program advises students to reserve their spaces early if these workshops are offered again. The workshops are offered on a first- come first- served basis, and once the spaces are filled students are put on a waiting list. The Beautiful Woman Within workshop is a three session workshop designed to help women get in touch with themselves through easy movement, journal writing, and reflection. The workshop will also focus on helping women become more aware of their bodies and feelings to create a more positive body image. The program will be conducted on Thursdays, October 10,17, and 24. Spaces are available for this workshop. The cost of the workshop is $5 and students should contact the Wellness Program to reserve a space. Cholesterol Screenings will be conducted on September 17 and 18 for National Cholestrol Education and Awareness Month. The screenings will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m in Killian 104. The cost for the screening is $15 and those interested need to make an appointment. Personal consultations PHOTO TERRY K. ROBERTS/WC Carla Cosio, WCU Wellness Program Director are available for individuals who have questions on nutrition, diet, exercise, or other wellness issues. Students can schedule an appointment with a Wellness Program staff member or simply call to receive information. The Wellness Program, in conjunction with Last Minute Productions, will sponsor an AIDS Awareness Week , November 18-22. The Wellness Program will also participate in Rape and Alcohol Awareness Weeks. Wellness Program staff members gives about 20 presentations per semester on wellness and health topics to classes, organizations, and residence halls. These groups are encouraged to consult the Wellness Program if they are in - terested in scheduling a health- related presentation. Smoking Cessation classes are available pending interest. The classes are designed to help people quit smoking through stress management, nutrition, and exercise and addiction breaking tips. An exercise incentive program called WIF (Wellness, Intramurals, and Fitness) Exercise Challenge offers students prizes to exercise. Cosio said , "The program is trying to encourage people to begin exercising or to continue exercising." The program began in August and will conclude the last Wednesday of April. However, it is not too late to begin. Students and faculty can register and pick up a progress log in the Fitness Center or the Intramural Office. Hours can be accumulated participating in aerobics, yoga, intramurals, and other exercise activities. WIF members begin receiving prizes after accumulating 25 hours and after earning 200 hours receive a free t-shirt and a choice of one semester of free aerobics, fitness center membership, or one fitness testing session. The Wellness Program also operates a resource library which is available to both students and staff. The resource library offers books, videotapes, and brochures addressing a variety of topics such as relationships, STDs, stress, and many others. The library is open Monday through Friday- from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information on wellness programs, contact the Wellness Program at 227- 7018.
