western ■ • • arolinian Baseball Team off to Charleston Following Victory over UNC-A by Don Costello In a final tune-up for this weekend's Southern Conference Tournament ,the Catamounts came from behind to beat UNC Asheville, 9-7, in the final game imCullowhee this season. The UNC-A Bulldogs jumped all over Catamount pitching in the first four innings to take a six-run lead, 7-1. Chad Koone allowed six earned runs in his debut as a starting pitcher and reliever Donnie Suttles allowed one run to cross the plate. That's when Catamount pitching settled down and the bats came alive. The Cats added a run in the fifth before exploding on Bulldog pitching in the sixth inning for six runs to put Western up 8-7. Designated hitter Steve Harris added an insurance run in the seventh inning with his third home run in four games. Aaron Kirby (3-1) earned the victory for WCU by pitching one and a third innings and Chris Waters picked up the save, his fourth on the season. The victory over UNC-A marked the final home game for 10 WCU seniors. The 10 departing players are the largest senior class to ever Play together at Western. The senior Catamounts are: Western's all-time triples leader Martin Barrow (who didn't start against UNC-A because he was in class), the all-time single season steals leader Chuck Koone, Southern Conference RBI leader Jeff Sziksai, 1997 All- Southern Conference selections Matt Stillwell and Jeremy Bruce, first baseman Dave McKay, catcher Frankie Ward, and pitchers, Catamount ace Mark DiFelice, number two starter Brian Bain, and reliever Chris Waters. The seniors will lead the Cats lnto the Southern Conference Tournament this weekend in Charleston, S-C. Western will enter the tourna- ment as the third seed behind second seed, The Citadel, and SoCon regu lar season champion, UNC Greensboro. The Cats finished the SoCon season with a 20-6 record, one and a half games behind Greensboro. The 20 wins in conference play is the highest number of wins for a Catamount team since becoming a Southern Conference member in 1977. WCU has finished in one of the top three conference slots in 18 straight seasons. Georgia Southern will be the first round opponent for the Catamounts at 4:00 pm Thursday. Mark DiFelice will put his 9-1 record and 3.05 ERA on the mound against the Eagles. DiFelice led the Southern Conference in wins this season and ranked second in ERA. GSU finished sixth in the Southern Conference with a 9-15 mark, 17-25 overall. Western took two of three games from the Eagles in Statesboro, Ga., in mid-March. It will be the 15th installment of the Southern Conference Tournament, which has seen the Cats win more than half of them. Western won their eighth tournament title last season and hopes to repeat the heroics this year for the automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. "We are very confident going into the tournament," said coach Hennon. "Teams are usually up to play us because of our fortunes in the past but we have the momentum," he said. Western has one four games in a row and is averaging nearly 12 runs per contest in those games. The tournament is double elimination and the Cats will face either The Citadel or Davidson in the second round. If Western wins against Georgia Southern they will remain in the "winner's bracket" and a loss will propel them into the "loser's bracket." Brian Bain (8-4, 3.39 ERA) will pitch the second game for the Catamounts Friday. The finals will be Sunday, May 3, at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm if needed. The games can be heard locally on WRGC-radio, AM 680. *> « sports! 11 April 29,1998 Fact: The baseball team became the first Catamount team this year to win when the "Beat Appalachian!" sign was hanging from the White House. Opinion: The baseball team is the only team not affected by the "Beat Appalachian!" Curse. Please, can we get the curse lifted for basketball and football? Fact: The Catamounts scored 38 runs in the three-game series against Appalachian. Fifteen in game one, nine in game two, and 14 in the finale. Twelve of the runs in game one came in the seventh inning. Opinion: The 38 runs combined with the 8.68 team ERA for App State is the reason that a scoreboard has not been installed at the stadium in Boone. The Mountaineers are still waiting for someone to invent an electronic scoreboard that will allow for 12 runs to be displayed in a single inning. Fact: The sun was shining in Boone this weekend and the temperature reached a blistering 75 degrees. Opinion: Sun and high temperatures in Boone? That's a first. Fact: The dimensions of App State's baseball field contributed to the nine Catamount home runs this past weekend. The dimensions resemble a Little League park. Opinion: A Little League park by Don Costello for a Little League program. Fact: There is no running water and indoor plumbing at the baseball stadium in Boone. Opinion: The engineering program at App is still baffled by the fact that someone might need indoor plumbing and running water.! Outhouses and streams seem to work just fine for them. Fact: Boone is the home of Appalachian State. Opinion: There's nothing better than seeing Boone in your rear- view mirror. Fact: Antawn Jamison is leaving the Tar Heels for the NBA. Opinion: Jamison will be as successful in the NBA as some of his Tar Heel predecessors. Not Jordan or Worthy. Stackhouse and Wallace. Fact: The owner of "Event of the Year," a favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, withdrew the horse from the famed race last week because of injury. Opinion: It's conceited to name a horse "Event of the Year" when it reaches the age to make the run for the roses at the Kentucky Derby, the event of the year. Fact: This is. the last issue of the Carolinian this year. Opinion: I don't have one. Fact: That's a first. &okt DUNNAHOE SHAW BACKS THE CATS! FORD MERCURY GERALD DUNNAHOE President 1231 E.
