  • western ■ • • arolinian Catamount ^Notebook Week Players-of-the Week: The Western Carolina baseball team has swept the early Southern Conference Player-of-the- honors. Leftfielder Chuck Koone earned the award for the week of March 9 after hitting 8-for-13 over a three game sweep of Charleston Southern. Koone was 7-7 in the steal department, including five stolen bases in one game that tied a 21-year old school record. Last week, freshman outfielder Charles Thomas took home the same award. Thomas was a key in WCU taking the series from Georgia Southern, two games to one. In five contests he batted .611 (ll-of-18) with five RBIs, eight runs and two stolen bases. Women's Tennis News: The women's tennis team took off for Bermuda, yes Bermuda, last Saturday after posting a disappointing 0-4 back on the mainland. Wofford swept the Catamounts, 8-0, on March 13. They also dropped matches, 9-0, to UNC Greensboro on March 7 and 9-0 to Georgia Southern the day before. In the season opener, the netters narrowly lost to UNC Asheville, 4-3. Janie Wicklund, Tara Livengood, and Terryjean Youtz were victorious from the number one, two and three slots. Golf Briefs: The men's golf team traveled to Croaker, Va., during the break for the William and Mary Invitational and came home with a 13th place finish. The Catamounts shot 305 in the first round and 315 in round two. They finished 37 shots behind tournament winner Francis Marion, who shot 583 for the tourney. Andy Humble shot 75-78= 153 to top the Catamount bunch and finished 38th overall. The women's team took on the field at the College of Charleston Invitational at Pinehurst on March 2-3. The ladies had a disappointing 22nd place showing out of 23 teams.
