  • - Carolinian Track & Field Poised for Conference Championships by Daniel Hooker After good performances at the IKON Championships and in the VMI Winter Relays, the Western Carolina Track & Field teams will look to continue their success this weekend as they travel back to Johnson City, TN for the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Western has to be one of the favorites going into the competition. They have competed well against some of the nation's premier programs. For Coach Williamson's men's team, several track runners will be called upon for good performances. Akaba Glaspie, who runs the 60 and 200 meter events, and Johnie Morrison will be among the top runners in the conference. Morrison is coming off of a third place finish in Lexington, VA at the VMI Winter Relays in the 55 meter event. Also, Corey Williams, who now holds the school record in the 300 meters, will also have a good chance for a top finish. He also had a season-high finish, 2nd, at VMI. Johnny Bomar and Rahsaan Uldaneta, who both run the 55 and 60 meter hurdles, have had good indoor seasons. Williamson will be looking for them to step up and run their best times this weekend. In the men's field events, Tin Thomas and Joe Condrey will look to "vault" the Cats to a Southern Conference championship in the pole vault. Thomas finished first at VMI and Condrey has been consistently at the top of the order, posting one second place finish and three third places this season. Cory Cooper and Jimmy Johnson will look to have good performances in the high and long jump, as well as Johnson in the Triple jump. Rounding out the field event hopefuls will be Phillip Johnson in both the shot put and 35-lbs weight events. He recorded a second place finish in the shot put in Clemson earlier in the season, and a first place victory m the 35-lbs weight at the IKON Invitational in Johnson City. On the women's side, coach Williamson is equally excited about the prospects for a top conference finish. Pacing the way for the Lady Cat track team will be Maria Hyman and Kamilah Gabriel in the 55 meter and 60 meter events. Maria finished third in tr»e 55 meter event at VMI. Hyman also runs the 200 and Gabriel 18 involved with the 55 and 60 meter hurdles. Accompanying Hyman on the 200 meter course will be Shawanta Person, who also competes in the 400 meter race. She Posted a second place finish in the 200 meter and a third in the 400 meter events at VMI. The team entered the tournament with renewed confidence coming off the big win over rival Appalachian State two weeks ago. Teams from the University of Florida, Florida State, Wake Forest, The Citadel, Georgia Southern, Clemson, South Carolina, Central Florida, and three men's clubs will compete in the tournament. The opening game for the Catamounts was a tough loss against the University of Florida. The Gators, ranked eighth in the country, capitalized on Western's hesitancy early with two scores in the first five minutes. The Cats turned around and played their best rugby of the year, holding the potent Florida team to only two scores for the remainder of the game. Following the opening loss, West- em shut out a Georgia Southern select side with a 24-0 victory, and then lost a hard- Rugby Team photo by T.K. Roberts fought game to the Augusta Men's Club in the five-six playoff game. The ruggers put Western Carolina on the rugby map this past weekend, earning the respect from many larger and more illustrious rugby universities. The Gators were so impressed with the Catamounts' play that they want to schedule an annual game. The rugby team returns to Southern Conference play over the next three weeks with games at home against Davidson, UNC- Charlotte, and Elon College. Any individuals interested in joining the rugby team can contact coach Mark Smith at 227-7333 or attend practice Tuesday through Thursday, 4-6 p.m. behind Reid Gym. Baseball Feb. 18—Cats at South Carolina Feb. 21—Cats Vs Wright State (DH) 12 noon, Childress Field/Hennon Stadium Feb. 22—Cats Vs Wright State 1 p.m., Childress Field/Hennon Stadium with Fish Hello fans, it's me, Fish, and I'm back with another Wrap-Up. The week has gone by fast and not that much has happened. But i'm going to start out with some terrible news for WCW and general wrestling fans alike. Sunday morning, Louie Spicolli was found dead at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 27. Early reports have him dying of a suspected bad mix between wine and painkillers he was taking. He was an up and rising star when he died. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Now, on to some more troubling times for the nWo and WCW. We start out with Thunder this week. On Thunder, we saw Hogan come out and start to rag on Bret Hart and how he will beat him anywhere at any time. Hopefully this will bring about the long-awaited Hart vs. Hogan match. We also had several clips from the past to get us more interested about what's going down at Superbrawl this Sunday. It looks to be a killer PPV, so make it a point to try to watch it this Sunday! On Nitro this week, we saw the return of Hennig and Rude to the nWo after a long stay in Japan. We also saw the induction of a new member. Brian Adams (known as Crush in the WWF) showed up during a Hart interview and told Bret a bunch of lies, then the good stuff happened when the nWo ran in and started to punk on Hart. Then (Whooooo!) Flair came in for the save. Look for them to team up as a tag team here soon to combat the nWo. For the final match that night, we see Sting and Luger vs. Hogan and Savage. Now we all know that Hogan and Savage have been at each other's throats, but tonight they seemed pretty cool at the beginning of the match. When push came to shove, the nWo came in and started to attack. Then we see Savage go after Hogan and Flair and Hart come in to help WCW as they ran off the nWo to stop the show. This is about all for this week, but on Thunder this Thursday, look for DDP and Benoit vs. Raven and Saturn. I'm looking forward to it, and next week I'll recap Superbrawl and who the new Champion is. My prediction says it will be Sting! That's all for this week, see you next time-,.
