  • western ■• • arolinian Craig Wells, Statistic King Mountaineers Sweep the Lady Cats <5k> sports February 4,1998 11 by Julian Brosset "Phillips only shot 25 percent from the floor for the game and completed 12 of 12 foul shots, which is a new career high...Sharon Mitchell, Georgia Southern's leading scorer, had 21 points on 80 percent shooting, while fellow post-woman Telly Hall, who came in averaging 15.1 points per game, contributed 19 to the cause by shooting 8-13...Western knocked down only 41 percent of its shots and 24 percent from downtown...." When students and sports fans read theWestern Carolinian, or go online to the Catamount Sports page, they don't realize that a man spends most of his day doing the statistics and news releases that they read. This person is also present at most every football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball games here at Western Carolina. He is on the sideline, fixed on his laptop computer. Craig Wells, the Assistant Sports Information Director, is a 1988 graduate of Western Carolina University. While here, he earned his degree in Sport Management. Wells is in his eighth year as Steve White's assistant in publicizing the Catamounts' 14 men's and women's sports. A Jacksonville, N.C, native, Wells is in charge of the press row computer statistic systems for football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. He is also in charge of the men and women's Southern Conference Tournaments, as well as being the "webmaster" of the Western Carolina Athletics web site. Craig Wells really enjoys his job working with White. He also likes working m a comfortable place like WCU. He feels like working in a safe community and a friendly climate makes his job easier. Wells especially appreciates the mountains because he enjoys skiing and mountain climbing. "[My job] is not boring because the sports are different," commented Wells. "Each game is different too, so the statistics are never the same. I like to meet new people and to work with all the different coaching staffs." When Craig was younger, he used to keep the tracks and box scores of his favorite teams or players. Consequently, he considers his actual job as a natural continuation. Working in Steve White's shadow is not a problem, according to him, because they don't do the same work. Steve does most of the public relations work, while Craig handles the electronic portion. He feels like they work as a team. "Steve is a well-respected person. I'd like to be the next SID, as it would be a step up for me. But, he has a hard job and I'm not hurried to take his place. For the moment, I am happy to be the assistant," commented Wells. White echoes Craig's praises. "I am happy to work with Craig," stated White. "I'm extremely fortunate to get a person like him, with such skills and personality." White is pleased to have an assistant who can handle the electronic media, graphics, the Western media guides and the good-looking web site. Other members of the athletic department have noticed and appreciate Well's job. Head football coach, Bill Bleil, noted, "Craig has a tough and hard job, but he does it in a super way. The web site and statistics are great." So, next time, when you read your newspaper or go to the web site, have a thought for the man behind the scenes— Craig Wells. He will be happy to know you appreciate all of his work and efforts. WCW Wrap-Up with Fish V Glenda fs Tanning Highway 107 South At Glenda's Phillips 66 Gas & Grocery Call for Appointment at 293-5015 First Time Customer Gets First Visit Free by Daniel Hooker The Appalachian State Lady Mountaineers completed the seasonal sweep of the Western Carolina University Lady Catamounts by defeating the Cats 65-47 in Cullowhee. It marked the fifth straight loss for Western Carolina. The loss also drops the Cats to 4-15,2-8 in the Southern Conference. The win was the fourth straight conference win for ASU, and improved the Mountaineers to 7-12 overall, 6-4 in the SC. Head Coach Maria Fantanarosa appeared disappointed with the loss. "We had a lot of shots that did not fall tonight," commented Fantanarosa. "When we don't hit our shots, we get tentative on defense." The Lady Catamount attack was led by freshman April Fleck with 13 points. Of those points, nine of them came from behind the three-point arc. Yet, perhaps the biggest surprise for WCU was the play of another freshman, Katie Scott. A Herndon, Va., native, Scott tied her career high of 10 points and dished out four assists. "She has been working very hard in practice and she had a great game tonight," noted Fantanarosa. "She took full advantage of her opportunity tonight." Western's first points came at the 15:43 mark of the first half on one of April Fleck's three-pointers. That score ended the 12 minute drought that dated back to January 22 when ASU defeated the Lady Cats 71-44 in Boone. Western was outrebounded 50- 34 by App State and outshot 41 percent to 31 percent for the game. Coach Fantanarosa stated that her and the team are going to keep working on the fundamentals like boxing out, rebounding, stopping penetration, and hopefully, in the process, gain some team confidence. "I know that they're frustrated," commented Fantanarosa. "But I know that this group will not give up." The Lady Cats will be home this Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest versus the Furman Lady Paladins in the Ramsey Center. Hello fans, sorry there wasn't a column last week. It's kinda hard to write one and get it in when you are stuck under 20 inches of snow and without power, but anyway... We have a lot of news to cover in the two weeks I've been gone! Number one is the Souled Out PPV. This PPV was better than Starrcade! In some of the better matches, we saw Chris Jericho beat Rey Mysterio Jr. for the Cruiserweight title. In the battle of the big men, we saw Kevin Nash beat the Giant via a powerbomb that just about broke the Giant's neck. I'll get to that here in a sec. The big news came when Roddy Piper returned to the ring and continued his interim commissioner role (w/ J. J. Dillon authorizing it). He announced that since no one had the title, Scott Hall (who got a title shot when he won WW3) couldn't do anything since no one had the title! Piper then announced that Sting and Hogan would go at it one more time to decide who the champion is. This will take place at Superbrawl on Feb. 22.1 look forward to this one! Although all that was good and nice, Souled Out produced one of the most surprising moments when Scott Hall came to fight Larry Zbysko. Dusty Rhodes came down to be at Zbysko's side, but when push came to shove, the Dream shattered and Dusty is now NWO for life! Now, about the Giant, he will be out for about four months after suffering a concussion and some vertebrae damage, our thoughts go out to him for a speedy recov ery. On Nitro and Thunder, we have seen more and more angles developing. Each one seems to just get better and better. Jim Neidhart and Davey Boy Smith (British Bull dog) have now officially joined WCW. They both have made their marks in the WWF, now let's see if they can do it in WCW as well. Chris Benoit and Bill Goldberg have also been getting big pushes as of late. Chris Benoit and DDP will be going at it this Thursday on Thunder, look for Benoit to get his well-deserved title reign.
