Lady Spartans Cats Drop Thriller to Overwhelm the Cats Apps, 81-77 by Daniel Hooker After being tied at 34 at half-time, the UNC-Greensboro Lady Spartans outscored the Western Carolina Lady Cats 56-14 to take the Southern Conference win 90-48. The loss relegates Western to 4-16,2-9 in the Southern Conference. UNC-G improved to 13-7 overall, and 7-3 in the conference. The Lady Cats were led in scoring by sophomore Willow Russell with ten points. She also pulled down five rebounds in the losing effort. Freshman April Fleck, the team's leading scorer, was limited to only nine points on three of 14 shooting from the field. She also committed seven turnovers and made four steals. Seniors LaSha Jackson and Karen Mason also added eight and seven points respectively. Jackson had the team-high six rebounds, and Mason fouled out of the game. Western committed 34 turnovers, 11 of which came off of the hands of junior Tamara McMahan. The UNC-G Lady Spartans put four players into double figures, including two with game-high 18 points. Rebecca Viverette and Melinda Goodson, both forwards, plagued WCU inside. Behind Viverette and Goodson's inside rebounding, eight and nine respectively, the Lady Spartans out-rebounded the Lady Cats 44-33. On a positive note, WCU outshot the Spartans 52 percent to 40 percent in the first half to hang in against one of the best teams in the con- Catamount Coach Maria Fantanarosa -Photo by T.K. Roberts ference. However, they shot a dismal 23 percent and only scored 14 points in the second stanza, while UNC-G hit 60 percent of their shots. The Lady Cats' next game will be back here in Cullowhee when the Lady Paladins of Furman University come to the Ramsey Center this Saturday. Like so many of the previous versions, Western Carolina would prefer to have the 81-77 overtime loss to Appalachian State put in fine print deep within the scriptures. Unfortunately, the Catamounts' loss goes down as the fifth straight loss in the 148- game series with the Apps. A dejected Coach Phil Hopkins said Appalachian "seems to have our number." It didn't look that way with 11 minutes remaining in the game when WCU took a 62-50 lead after a Bobby Phillips three- pointer from the left baseline. Following the shot, App State called timeout. Appalachian Coach Buzz Peterson, a former player at UNC and Michael Jordan's college roommate, told his players in the timeout to "pick it up." "We gotta step up and take control," shouted Peterson. The Mountaineers responded by slowly chipping away at the Catamount lead. With 3:25 remaining, senior point guard Joel Fleming got the ball to junior forward Dondrell Whitmore, who dunked it home to give the Cats a 72-65 lead. ASU answered with another three-pointer at the top of the key on the next possession to cut the Catamount lead to four. Appalachian tied the game with two free throws by Marshall Phillips with 40 ticks on the clock, 72-72. Following an App State timeout, the Cats could not get a shot in their last possession and turned the ball over to ASU with eight seconds remaining. The Mountaineers would miss a three-pointer to send it to overtime. In the extra frame, neither WCU nor ASU could score in the first 2:08. At that point, App's Matt McMahon buried a shot from beyond the arc but Joel Fleming re sponded with a three-pointer of his own on the Cats' next possession to knot the game at 75. Following two free throws by ASU guard Ian Adams and another Catamount turnover, the Mountaineers' Blair Adderley connected on a running jumper to push the Catamount deficit to four, 79-75. Joel Fleming made it 79-77 with 42 seconds left with a running jumper of his own. Catamount center Jarvis Graham missed a three-pointer with: 14, and ASU got the rebound. Western could not catch up, and when Matt McMahon connected on a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game, it was over. "We had breakdowns both offensively and defensively," said Coach Hopkins regarding the last 11 minutes of the game. "It should've never gone into OT." Joel Fleming led the Catamounts with 21 points and ten assists. Western's two other seniors, Bobby Phillips and Jarvis Graham, chipped in 17 and 14 respectively, while Dondrell Whitmore added 14 of his own. "Bobby Phillips looked like a man possessed out there tonight," said ASU's Buzz Peterson. "Western Carolina is a team I don't wanna see in the [Southern Conference] tournament." The Catamounts now stand at 9-11 on the season and 4-7 in conference play and fifth in the Southern Conference's North Division. Appalachian State leads the North with an 8-1 conference record. Last Saturday, the Catamounts fell to VMI in Lexington, Va., 94-80 despite an early ten-point lead. Five Cats scored in double figures led by Dondrell Whitmore with 14 points. The Southern's Conference's leading scorer and last week's conference player of the week Bobby Phillips chipped in 12 in the losing effort. Western will now make the long haul down to Statesboro, Ga., to jump it up with the Georgia Southern Eagles this Saturday at 3 p.m. Live telecast of the game can be heard on the Catamount Sports Network. n FORD MERCURY DUNNAHOE SHAW BACKS THE CATS!
