  • western ■ • • arolinian Calling All Rowdies! Commentary by Daniel Hooker The Liston B. Ramsey Center (for those of you who don't know, that is the big black glass building adjacent to the football field) has a seating capacity of approximately 7,826. The average attendance this season for Catamount basketball was about 1,778— and those showing up for Lady Cats basketball is even lower. Now, I am not the best in math, but that is a major difference, which equals empty seats. The quietness that has loomed large at the basketball games is rivaled only by the stillness associated with the UNC-Chapel Hill "Whine and cheese" spectators. Now, don't get me wrong, the crowds so far this year have had their moments. Thinking back to the Mercer come-from-be- hind victory, or the big Southern Conference routing of the Furman Paladins, or even as recent as the disappointing loss to VMI, the crowds have become involved—for a little while. That, however, is not enough. The Lady Cats took on Davidson the same day the Catamounts routed Furman in men's basketball. The women's game ended 30 minutes before the men's contest started; however, the attendance for the women's game was less than 400, and over 2,500 showed up for the men's game. The crowd helped the men win but when the women looked to support when they came back from a deficit, there was no crowd there to give support. Those who have been the most energetic at these games have not been the students—instead, they have been a conglomeration of high school age students and older non-students. The extent of student participation has been limited to the rambunctious "Cat-house Band." If the entire crowd would follow the pep band's example, the Ramsey Center could be feared by the opposition as much as ACC teams fear Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium. Instead of the "Cameron A lonely soul at the Ramsey Center. Photo by T.K. Roberts. Crazies," how about the "Ramsey Rowdies?" The coaching and athletic staffs have tried to get attendance up. At the beginning of the year, the three seniors, Jarvis Graham, Joel Fleming and Bobby Phillips, called for participation on Alan Smother's post-game show, but no one listened. Even recently, to combat the excuses of the Ramsey Center being too far to go, the University Center has sponsored shuttle service to and from the games. Students, what will it take for you to not only come, but to be very vocal? We don't have to pay for tickets, we have free transportation, we have good teams, so what's the problem? Maybe Chancellor Bardo needs to approve tailgating before the games in the baseball field parking lot. It worked for football. I would like to issue a challenge to the WCU community. Come out and support the teams in both attendance and voice. Get into it! Let's spread "Catamount Fever" for this final push towards the Southern Conference Championships for both the men and women. Coach Phil Hopkins appeared out of breath, yet satisfied following the big Southern Conference win. "This was a big game for us. We need to win at home for our con- fidence and for our record," commented Hopkins. "But mainly for our confidence." Hopkins added, "It was a pretty good, complete team effort." Western was led in scoring and rebounds by senior Bobby Phillips with 18 points and 12 rebounds. This double-double performance was Phillip's second straight, and the thirteenth straight double figure scoring performance. Yet, Phillips struggled from the floor, only shooting 25 percent for the game. He did, however, complete 12 of 12 foul shots, which is a new career high. "Anytime a player can be off and struggle, yet still find a way to help his team, that is the mark of a great player," said Phillips. Yet, Bobby wanted to give the majority of the credit for the win to other players. Phillips and Coach Hopkins attributed the win to three other guys who came in off of the bench: freshman Stacy Ervin, sophomore Brett Carey, and junior Paul Cuthbertson. Stacy Ervin, who has one of the most dangerous three-point shots in the league, poured in 17 crucial points for the Cats. This was a career high for Ervin here at Western. However, he did struggle, at times early with his shot. Coach Hopkins commented, "Stacy is a great shooter. I want him to get more confidence in his shot." He went on to state that "he hit some big ones tonight." Hopkins and teammates continually told him to keep shooting, the confidence will come back. Bobby Phillips also commented on Ervin's struggle and performance. "We tell him that the confidence will come with age," stated Phillips through his big grin. Paul Cuthbertson, junior from Cleveland, N.C, added ten points and three steals for Western Carolina. He played 24 big minutes off of the bench. His defensive pressure was extraordinary. "The person that gave us the biggest lift tonight was Paul," stated Hopkins. "We need more out of him." Sophomore guard Brett Carey only Stacy Ervin lit up the Spartans for a season high 17 points. Photo by T.K. Roberts. scored four points, but his 12 minutes were needed as Joel Fleming spent the majority of the game in foul trouble. Carey made two steals and dished out two assists, including one at the end of the game to Dondrell Whitmore, who slammed it home with authority. Coach Hopkins commented that Carey's play was good. He also noted that he was glad to see that he could handle things in the last few minutes without Fleming having to come back in. Next up for Catamounts will be a trip to face the Boone Goons up in Boone, tonight at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Catamount Sports Network, where Alan Smothers will have the call.
