  • 20 Western Carolinian April 11,1996 Sports AT&T Honors WCU's Joe Stafford Joe Stafford, Catamount 3-point ace, received an engraved plaque for being the nation's top long distance shooter in a ceremony Tuesday at the Ramsey Center. Joe Stafford has won the AT&T Long Distance Award as the NCAA leader for the highest three-point field goal percentage in Men's Division I for the 1995-96 college basketball season. ■ A 6-foot-5 junior forward from Williamson, West Virginia (Williamson High School), Stafford connected on 52.7 percent of his three—point attempts (58-of- 110) in leading the Catamounts, (17-13) to the Southern Conference championship and a near upset of No. 1 seed Purdue in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The sociology major scored nine points on three treys in the 73-71 loss to Purdue. To honor each winner, AT&T makes a donation of $1000 to the NCAA's Degree Completion Award program, bringing the AT&T contribution to this Fund to $284,400. AT&T donated $4,000 to the same Fund each plinth during the basketball season to honor the player in Men's Division I, II and III and Women's Division I who converted the most tnree—pointers per game and the highest percentage of three-point field goal attempts. Successful three-point shooting is nothing new at Western Carolina. WCU's Ronnie Carr scored the first three-point basket in college basketball history on November 29, 1980 against Middle Tennessee State here at Reid Gym. A photograph of Carr and the historic ball are on display in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Joe Stafford of Western Carolina University's men's basketball team will be recognized as the NCAA Division I national leader in 3-point field goal percentage at a media conference to be held Tuesday, April 9, in the Ramsey Center Hospitality Room beginning at 3:00 p.m. AT&T will present Joe with their "Long Distance Award" which recognizes his achievement. In addition, an announcement will be made concerning further recognition of Joe's national leadership at the Basketball Hall of Fame in May.
