  • March 28,1996 Western Carolinian 19 Sports Football Cats Spring Scrimmage SPRING FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE SET FOR SATURDAY MORNING Western Carolina University's football team will hold its spring scrimmage game this Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. The two-hour controlled scrimmage, the final major practice scrimmage for WCU's 1996 football team, is open to the public at no charge. Coach Steve Hodgin, who is preparing for his seventh season as WCU's head coach, says he and his staff have reached most of their objectives for this spring practice, but will be looking for a few more answers in Saturday's scrimmage. "We have our offenses and defenses installed, with some new looks, and our special teams are well ahead of schedule," stated Hodgin. "We have been plugging in a lot of new people at several positions and I think we can safely name 18 of next season's starters," he added. According to Hodgin, the spring scrimmage will help the coaching staff fill the remaining starting spots and make decisions about depth at several positions. "Our offensive line is still our biggest question mark as solid at four positions with Jimmy Butler (tackle), Alex Sprinkle (center), Boo Robinson (guard) and Kawasak Penn (tight end), but two positions are open and up for grabs," he noted. "We have a very competitive situation at quarterback and who will be our starter appears to be far from decided," said Hodgin. The battle at quarterback is between Josh Brooks, a rising junior who has seen spot action in several games over the past two seasons, and Jerome beaks, a rising sophomore, who saw action in three games last Elsewhere on offense, eight tailbacks and fullbacks are battling for spots on the depth chart as are several wide receivers. On the defensive side, Hodgin is pleased with the progress at the down line positions and linebacking posts as the starters appear to be set, but is picture is not as clear in the secondary. The kicking game, with place— kicker/punter Ken Hinsley returning after a solid season and backed up by David Hill, is "in good hands," according to Hodgin. The three wins improved the Cats record to (19- 13-1) overall and (12-3) in the conference after starting the season (0-6). These wins gave the cats 12 wins in a row just one shy of the school record 13 wins set in 1991. Western's batters have been on a tear the past twelve games batting a combined .353 and being lead by Alex Tolbert's .500 average. Tolbert leads the league in batting average, hits, runs, and doubles. In the first game to VMI, Western was down 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning when Matt Stillwell hit a dramatic three run bomb to end the game. DiFeliceMar was the winning pitcher in the first game. Brian Bain was the winner in the second game of the double header on Saturday he held VMI to one run on four hits. Dale Pilgram pitched a great game on Sunday to pick up the win and finish off the Keydets. He tossed a career high 11 strike outs in this outing. Coach Keith LeClair is pleased with his team these past few weeks, but wants uV team to continue to improve right up until time for the Southern Conference Tournament. The Cats have three more conference series before the tournament, App State, Tht Citadel, and head to Davidson to end the regular season.
