  • 18 Western Carolinian February 29,1996 Sports Cats Romp App in Q's & Kullum's Going-Out Party by Jason Queen Staff Reporter Western Carolina's men's basketball team used a 7-2 run to start the second half to break open a fairly close game and cruised to a 91-72 victory over Appalachian State in front of a huge crowd in the Ramsey Center Monday night. With the win, the Cats finished the regular season at 10-4 in the Southern Conference, 14-12 overall. The Conference mark was good for the South Division title. Guard Anquell McCollum, in his final game in the Ramsey Center, led the Cats with 32 points and five assists. He also hit eight three-pointers. His first three of the night, which came with 17:59 left in the first half, made him the Southern Conference's all-time leader in trays He continued his long-range barrage the rest of the night, making the new record 237 bombs. Western students answered the challenge Terry Roberts issued last week in the Carolinian, and 5,198 people packed the Ramsey Center to watch the last home game of the year. It seemed like a whole different building, certainly different than the one that usually gets about 1,500 fans on a good night. App looked as though they would make this a disappointing night for all Catamount fans, as they jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead at the 18:22 mark. But Q hit back-to-back threes and Kerry Wright hit a layup to grab a 1 0-9 lead just two minutes later. After a three minute scoring drought by both teams, Wright hit two free throws and Q drained another trey to make it a 15- 9 Cat lead with 12:00 left in the half. Blair Adderley's free throw a few moments later cut the Cats' lead to 23-20, but Western came right back with a 7-1 run to push the cushion back to 30-21. The Cats kept App at bay the rest of the half, and led by as many as 10 points on four different occasions. McCollum's jumper with one minute left in the half gave the Cats a comfortable 42-32 lead, but Tige Darner ended the half with a tip-in that cut the lead back down to eight, 42-34, at intermission. Q enjoyed his most accurate long- range half of the year, shooting an incredible 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. He finished the half with 17 points. Wright also played his best half in a Catamount uniform, scoring 11 points, pulling down 5 rebounds, and connecting on 5-of-6 free throws. Q opened the second half with another three, and back-to-back buckets by Joel Fleming gave the Cats a 1 5-point lead, 49- 34, right out of the gate. Fleming found Wright on the baseline, and Wright finished strong with a two-handed dunk to push the Cats' lead to 56-38 with 13:31 left to play and set the home crowd into a frenzy. Jarvis Graham's layup a minute later pushed the lead to 58-38, and it was all Western from there. McCollum's free throws with 4:40 left to play gave the Cats their biggest pad of the night, 79-52, with 4:40 left in the game. Coach Phil Hopkins thought this was a pretty good time to get the senior out of the game and give the crowd a chance to show their appreciation for his efforts over the last four years. And did they ever. Q received a well- deserved standing ovation that lasted several minutes. He acknowledged his appreciation for all their support by waving to the crowd, then hugged his coaches and teammates in a truly touching moment. From then on it was junk time, and Ken Gibson added the exclamation point with a double-pump, two handed jam with six seconds left. After the final buzzer sounded, the student body stormed the court, and the Western players cut down the nets to celebrate their first championship of any kind. Wright played by far his best game of the year. He finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Fleming continued his solid play at the . point guard position, scoring 6 points, handing out 7 assists, and pulling down 4 rebounds. Graham finished with 9 points and 5 boards off the bench. Kevin Kullum, playing in his first game in two weeks, scored 5 points in only 14 minutes. Western shot an impressive 55 percent from the floor and 55 percent from three- point land. The Cats' defense held App to just 43 percent shooting. The Cats will play the winner of the Citadel-Appalachian St. game Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum in the Quarter-finals of the Conference tournament. Western Races Past ETSU; Grabs Southern Division Title by Jason Queen Staff Reporter Before Saturday night, it had never happened to Western Carolina. In fact, only twice since 1982 had it even been a possibility. That all changed Saturday night, however, as Western Carolina wrapped up the regular season title in the South Division of the Southern Conference for the first time since joining the league in 1977-78. Behind another stellar effort by Anquell McCullum and solid ball-handling, the Catamounts built an eighteen point lead against the Bucs of East Tennessee State University and then held on for a 93-91 victoryat the Memorial Center in Johnson City. The victory assures Western of the Southern Division title and a number one seed in the Southern Conference Tournament beginning February 29 in Greensboro. The game started quickly for ETSU as they streaked to an early lead. Playing on the emotion of Senior Day and Allan LeForce's last game coaching, the Bucs jumped to a ten point bulge before Western even knew what hit them. However, with 8:59 remaining in the half and Western trailing 17-27, the man known simply as "Q" stepped up his game. McCullum laid in a rebound to cut the lead to eight, made a great assist to Kerry Wright to cut the lead to six, and followed a 3-pointer by Joe Stafford by nailing his second three of the night to cut the deficit to two at 27-29. Two minutes later "Q" nailed another three, to push Western ahead by 5, and cap a 17-2 run by the Catamounts. When the buzzer rang ending the first 20 minutes, Anquell had 20 points (4-6 from the 3-point line) and Western had a 45-37 lead. Joel Flemming also had a great half for the Cats, ending with 5 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. After the game, Phil Hopkins spoke proudly of this team's effort to end the half. "We didn't get a real good to start the game, and they played really well. But I thought we showed our true grit in the first half. We came back and were able to be up at halftime.'1 The Catamounts roared out of the locker room and dominated the outmanned Buccaneers over the first ten minutes of the half. Behind sizzling three-point shooting from Joe Stafford and inspired by Anquell, Western scored 38 points during this stretch alone. With 9:15 left to play, McCullum hit a 19 foot jumper from the right side to stretch Western's lead to 83-65. The game appeared to be out of reach for the Bucs and the Cats began to relax. Little did they know that this was to be their final field goal of the night. The next Western points came on two free throws by Joel Flemming with 5:16 left to play. This stretched Western's lead to 85- 80 and ended a 15-0 ETSU run. The rest of the game was a free-throw shooting contest for Western. The Cats passed the test... barely. When the dust cleared, the scoreboard read 93-91 in favor of lye Catamounts, and Coach Hopkins breathed a sigh of relief. "It was a great win. Even as bad as we played at times, I thought our team showed a lot of character ... we showed a lot of poise and battled back. I am proud of these kids!" "The reason that we are where we are, you can say it with one letter. The letter's Q. I'm not talking about the points. I'm talking about, he wouldn't let these guys fold. He makes them play hard, he doesn't let anybody loaf. And that's the reason. These players, they believed in themselves. It is just a great feeling for these guys to have hung in there!" Anquell McCullum hit 5 of 9 three pointers to tie the Southern Conference record for threes (a record he later broke against Appalachian State)... Joe Stafford was on fire from outside, hitting 6-6 from behind the arch to keep him in contention for the NCAA lead in 3-point percentage . .. Joel Flemming played a superb game at the point, finishing with 12 points, 9 assists and 2 steals and only 3 turnovers v .. Kerry Wright continued his improved play, pulling nine rebounds ... Kevin Kullum did not dress out for the game ... This was the last regular season game for Allan LeForce as coach of the Buccaneers.
