Steve Ryan returns to WCU as defensive secondary coach, a position he held seven years ago before accepting a similar job at Northeast Louisiana University. Dick O'Brien, former University of Tennessee assistant and highly successful high school coach in Florida, has been named to coach the Catamounts' running backs and special teams. "We feel fortunate to have coaches of the caliber of Steve Ryan and Dick O'Brien joining our staff," said Hodgin. "They will bring some fresh ideas and styles to our staff," he added. The new appointments are effective immediately. The remaining two staff vacancies— quarterbacks coach and offensive line coach—are expected to be filled in the near future, according to Hodgin. Ryan has coached the defensive secondary at Northeast Louisiana, an NCAA Division I independent, for the past six seasons. He coached WCU's defensive secondary for one season— 1989—on the staff of Dale Strahm before moving to NLU in 1990. He originally came to Western from Virginia Military Institute where he had been defensive secondary coach for four seasons, 1985- 88. j While at Northeast Louisiana, Ryan helped coach the Indians to a pair of Southland Conference championships (1990 & 1992) and three top 20 finishes in the NCAA I-AA polls. Three of his NLU defensive backs—Tito Wooten (New York Giants), Larry Whigham (New Erigland Patriots) and Conrad Clarks (Indianapolis Colts)—are active players in the National Football League. The 41-year old native of Moncks Corner, SC, is a 1980 Clemson University graduate where he was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference defensive back in the 1977 and J978 seasons and was named to Clemson's All-Tiijne Football Team in 1983. | "Coach Ryan is not a newcomer to our staff, but brings an aggressive style, innovative ideas and a lot of experience to our defensive side of the ball," said Hodgin. "His roots are in this region and he is not new to Southern Conference football or our recruiting areas. We are looking forward to him developing our young, talented defensive backs." O'Brien, 57, has coached special teams, including the kicking personnel, at Tennessee for the last three seasons and helped the Volunteers to earn three bowl game bids. One of his punters at UT—Tom Hutton—is with the Philadelphia Eagles and he also coached John Becksvoort who set the NCAA record for consecutive extra points (161) and never missed a kick conversion. He coached football in Florida for 31 years, including two seasons at the University of Tampa and 29 seasons at four Tampa Bay area high schools. He was head coach at Hillsborough High and King High in Tampa and at Clearwater High. He was Florida High School Coach of the Year in 1967, 1968, 1976 and 1977, and his teams won four state championships, played in three other state championship games, won seven region, 10 district and 16 conference championships. In his last season at Hillsborough High, he coached the south all-stars to a win in Florida's Shrine Bowl Game played in Jacksonville's Gator Bowl. O'Brien is a native of Leonardo, NJ, with an undergraduate degree from the University of Tampa and a graduate degree from Western Kentucky University. "Coach O'Brien brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program," sa d Hodgin. "His credentials as a kicking coach are outstanding and he has a widely known reputation for developing and coaching running backs, pli|s his great connections in Florida should help our recruiting efforts down there," he added. Ryan replaces Tim Beckman, who left WCU after six seasons to become defensive coordinator at Elon College. O'Brien takes over! duties handled by Sandy Kinney for the past twq seasons.
