  • 20 Western Carolinian January 25,1996 Sports Cats Beat Southern for First Conference Win by Jason Queen Head Sports Reporter Western Carolina's men's basketball team ended its three-game losing skid with an 81-71 win over conference doormat Georgia Southern it Statesboro Monday night. The Cats used a 12-3 run over the first four minutes of the second half to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a 49-41 lead. The Bulldogs never seriously threatened again and got no closer than six the last 13 minutes of the game. Catamount guard Anquell McCollum led all scorers with a season-high 28 points. Kevin Kullum poured in a career-high 24 points on the night. "The team needed this," a relieved Coach Phil Hopkins said after the game. "I'm not going to harp on our mistakes. I'm just going to enjoy the win." It looked as though the Cats were going to blow the Dogs right out of the building early. Kullum's lay-up on a feed from Joel Fleming made it 13-4 with 15:47 left in the first half. But Southern responded with a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead. The Cats answered with another big run of their own. Larry Mayo stole an in-bounds pass and fed Jarvis Graham underneath for a dunk that gave WCU a 27-] 9 lead with eight minutes left in the half. But Southern clawed back to take a 38-37 lead at intermission. To put it very kindly, this was one of the ugliest halves of basketball you will ever see. Both teams combined to commit 27 personal fouls. Western shot itself in the foot by Furman Accepts WCU's Gift by Jason Queen Head Sports Writer They should have been handing out Imodium A-D at the door for Saturday night's Southern Conference matchup between Western Carolina and Furman, because the game was full of runs. Unfortunately for the homestanding Catamounts, Furman closed the game with a 16-0 run over the last 3:27 to pull off a 97-86 win in front of a huge crowd at the Ramsey Center. The Paladins sank their final 17 free throws to seal the Cats' fate. Kevin Kullum led Western with a career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Kullum converted a three-point play with 7:56 left in the first half to tie it at 30-30. Furman exploded for a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to make it 46-32. Anquell McCollum's layup capped a 9-1 Catamount spurt to cut the lead to 47-41 at the 1:20 mark. But the Paladins ended the half with a 9-3 run to take a 56-44 lead into the locker room. making only 13 of 23 free throws. The Bulldogs weren't much better, though, hitting eight of their 16 foul shots. "They kicked our tails in the first half," Hopkins said. McCollum had I ] points in the half, but only shot three of eight from the floor. He also struggled from the line. He came in leading the conference shooting 90 percent from the free throw line, but sank only five of eight in the half. McCollum quickly got on track in the second half, though, scoring 10 points in the first 6:10 to help the Cats build a 5546 lead. Kullum and Fleming provided the bulk of the scoring punch with McCollum the rest of the way, as the Cats improved to 1-2 in conference play and 4- 10 overall. Furman drilled eight three-pointers in the half, including five by freshman Jason Stewart. While Stewart controlled the outside, Chuck Vincent controlled the inside. Vincent was a perfect 9 for 9 from the floor in route to 18 first half points. The Cats stormed out of the locker room, fired up and ready to play some defense. They used an 18-6 run, sparked by Kullum's 12 points during that spurt to take a 73-67 lead with 10:23 left to play. With the home crowd on its feet and making noise, the Cats stretched their lead "I was really pleased with our defense in the second half," Hopkins added after the game. "Anquell hit some big buckets. And I think Kevin Kullum is getting better and better and better." The Cats continue their Southern Conference schedule when they host the red- hot Citadel Bulldogs Saturday night in the Ramsey Center. Game time is 7 pra., and Coach Hopkins finished his interview by requesting, "I hope we have a big crowd there for the Citadel." NOTES: Graham, Fleming, and Joe Stafford started Monday night in an attempt to generate more offense. Fleming and Graham responded with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Cats shot a horrid 24 of 41 from the free throw line. Freshman Jonah Seay led GSU with 19 points. ot 82-75 on Joel Fleming's jumper at the 5:09 mark. McCollum's layup with 3:27 left on the clock gave the Cats an 86-81 lead. But Western missed its last eight shots from the field and Furman didn't miss anything to provide the final margin, 97-86. NOTES: McCollum finished with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Scott Scholtz and Joe Stafford chipped in 10 apiece. Stewart and Vincent paced Furman with 29 and 28, respectively.
