  • January 19,1996 Western Carolinian 19 Sports Lady Cats Break School Steal Record Western Carolina rolled up an 85-28 dctory over NAIA member Montreat College this afternoon in the Ramsey Center tnd broke the school single-game steal ecord in the process. In a game postponed from Saturday, he Lady Catamounts (4-7) used pressure lefense to force 41 Montreat turnovers, ncluding 27 in the first half en route to a 33- ) intermission edge. WCU outshot the Lady Cavaliers (4-8), 45 to 27 percent, and out- •ebounded them 50 to 33, including a 23-7 % on the offensive boards. Every Lady "at played at least 16 minutes and all but Mie scored. The 27 steals broke the previous school record of 23 set last season against Georgia State. The Lady Cats also established a new facility record for fewest points Jlowed, bettering the 39 allowed to Coastal Carolina in 1986. The 57-point spread was WCU's '»gest margin of victory since a 119-58 win over Berea College in the 1982-83 season. Amy Baker, who played her first two collegiate seasons at Montreat before transferring to WCU, led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. Also in double figured scoring were teammates Karen Mason (16), Pam Owens (14), and Makisha Gary (13). LaSha Jackson came off the bench to grab a game-high 10 rebounds. Missy Broy led the defensive effort with six steals plus handed out 10 assists. Montreat was led by Amy Harkleroad's nine points and eight rebounds. The game served as Western's final tune-up before beginning Southern Conference play in earnest. The Lady Cats play the first of five straight road games against league foe Davidson this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Courtesy of Sports Information Stafford Honored For 3-Point Shooting Joe Stafford of Western Carolina University has won the AT&T Long Distance Award for the highest three- point fields goal percentage in NCAA men's Division one for games played through the first section of the 1995-96 college basketball season. Each month, AT&T recognizes the player from Division I, II and III and Women's Division one who converts the most three-pointers per game and the highest percentage of three-point field goal attempts. A 6-foot-5 junior swingman from Williamson West Virginia (Williamson High School), Stafford connected on 63.6 percent of his three-point attempts (14-of-22) as the Catamounts opened their season against one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Stafford is averaging 7.0 points per game with a high of 16 in a 92-67 win over Wofford on January 4. He sank four treys in that contest and three against Georgia Tech. In recognition of his "Long Distance" accomplishments, AT&T has donated $500 to the NCAA'S Degree- Completion Award Program, bringing the AT&T contributions to this Fund to $268,400.
