  • Western Carolinian November 9,1995 News 1 Public Safety Highlights • Officers responded to an alarm in the Computer Center at 9:15 a.m. on 11/4. • A student reported that his bicycle was stolen from a stairwell in Leather- wood between 3:00 PM and 4:00 p.m. on 11/3. • A student reported that his car had been struck by a pellet or BB while it was parked near Albright at 11:59 p.m. on 11/ 4. Two nonstudents reported that their car had been struck in a similar manner near Harrill at 11:10 p.m. Officers interviewed several suspects on the fifth floor of Harrill about the incident. The investigation is continuing. • Officers found four signs stolen from the front of Scott, Hunter, Graham, and Chancellor's Drive at 6:10 a.m. on 11/ 5. • Officers responded to a fire alarm in Moore at 12:35 a.m. on 11/5. No fire detected between 11/3 and 11/5. • Officers towed seven vehicles for parking on campus after parking privileges were revoked. • A staff member reported that a window was broken from her vehicle while it was parked in the Administration Building lot at 11:30 a.m. • A student in Walker reported that she was receiving obscene telephone calls at 2:00 p.m. • Officers served a warrant on a female student charging her with simple assault in connection with an incident which occurred in Scott last Wednesday night. • A student reported that the headlight covers were stolen from her vehicle between Sunday at 10:00 p.m. and Monday at 5:55 p.m. while the car was parked in the Creek Lot at Ramsey. • Officers investigated a vandalism to a construction vehicle, by unknown person(s) spraying with white paint at 7:25 a.m. on 11/1 • Officers investigated a possible B & E _ L/ Auto, owner could not be located for verification. 11:23 p.m. on 11/01 • Officers assisted Jackson County Sheriffs Department with a juvenile custody Community-Fraternity Conflict by Kelly Donaldson Contributing Writer On Thursday, October 26, 22 members of the community who reside near "frat row" located in the vicinity of Carolina Village, held a meeting with fraternity presidents, community and campus leaders. WCU Director of Public Safety Gene MacAbee attended the meeting and provided the following information. The citizen's group was represented by Darrell Bryson. He said the citizens wanted to complain about noise, parking problems, littering, large crowds, vandalism, public nudity, indecent activities such as urinating in public, speeding and reckless driving. Bryson said those things reduced property values and disrupted sleep. Jackson County Sheriff Jim Cruzan indicated he would take a more forceful stance with the problems described. WCU leaders attending the meeting were Dr. Glenn Stillion, Dean Haggard, IFC president Chris Botti, and MacAbee. Community leaders attending were Fire Marshall Mike Ensley and Sheriff Cruzan. There are tentative plans for another meeting in two weeks. Ironically, according to MacAbee, "Roughly one hour after the meeting was over, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department shut down a party at the Sigma Chi house. I'm not sure if it was because of the meeting, or for other reasons." The Vice-President of the Sigma Chi fraternity was issued a ticket for violation of the noise ordinance. MacAbee said of the matter, The problem could be easily solved if people would treat everybody like they would want to be treated, but the use of alcohol leaves no concern for the rights of others." order at Scott Dorm, Juvenile not found. 6:p.m. on 10/31 • Officers investigated a B & E & L of a motor vehicle while it was in the cross creek lot. Property was removed form the vehicle by unknown person(s). 4:15 p.m. on 11/01. • Officers investigated vandalism to motor vehicle while it was parked at Madison Dorm 5:05 p.m. on 11/01 • Officers investigated a larceny of a passport, Madison Dorm at 4:30 p.m. on 11/02 • A report of a Breaking and Entering/ Larceny from a locker located in the locker room of Ramsey Center at 9:20 p.m. on 11/02 • Officers investigated an altercation that occured on the 3rd. floor Leatherwood Dorm. A student was sprayed with mace by a fellow student at 1:30 a.m. on 11/02 •Officers executed a search warrant on the Kappa Alpha fraternity house and found three signs which were stolen from campus early Sunday morning | and pieces of the outdoor sculpture "Two by Two" which was damaged at the same time. Also confiscated were several NC Department of Transportation signs and one sign from Moody's Funeral Home. A full report and charges are pending. • Officers assisted the WCU EMS team with a student who had fallen in the hallway in McKee at 1:25 a.m. • A student reported that a j parking light and tail light were stolen form his vehicle while it was parked in the Benton lot between 11/3 and 11/6 • Officers responded to a possible domestic disturbance in || Robertson at 5:32 p.m. • Officers assitd an intoxicated male student in Walker by trasporting him to Leatherwood and leaving him with Housing staff members at 12:08 a.m. UC Renovations Set to Begin Western Carolina University has outgrown Hinds University Center. Due to a shortage of meeting space, excess traffic, shortcomings in the original design, and general incapacity, the U.C. is scheduled to undergo a $4 million renovation. A.K Hinds will be closing in November with renovations beginning in early December. Since November 1, organizations, services and rooms have systematically closed or relocated in preparation for the construction. The information desk, game room, student lounge, Last Minute Productions, administrative offices, Student Government Association offices, and food services will remain open as late as possible. All facilities are scheduled to close on November 17, at 5 p.m. Tim Jacobs, director of Hinds University Center, stated, "We have every intention of providing the same services during the renovation." The relocation of U.C. services has been rental ,muter arranged to be as efficient as possible. However, considering the entire building will be "gutted" and rebuilt, certain inconveniences are to be expected. During the renovation, the Univers"j Center will operate at the Camp Lab Building.
