Bryant is the President of the University of North Carolina Association of Student Government (UNCASG) and a student at the North Carolina Agriculture and Technical School (NC A&T). SGA President Jessica Laverty invited Bryant to speak to WCU students about issues involving the NC University system. At the meeting, they discussed issues such as system-wide tuition increases, advancing technology at WCU, more student involvement with the SGA and increasing communication with the SGA at UNCA. Bryant also introduced the '95-96 ASG agenda. Some of the items on the agenda included developing an Internet connection for each member school, Pictured left to right: UNCASG vice president Andre Fortune, SGA president Jessica Laverty, and ASG president Keith Bryant Photo by Marcus Demaaijer utilizing tele/video-conferencing and taking action on state issues such as tuition increases and budget cuts to the UNC system. The idea of implementing a program where students can use financial aid to pay for computers was also discussed. Finally, Laverty and company expressed a desire to make the Board of Trustees more visible on campus, by increasing student involvement with the board. Western's PRSSA Up and Running Receives National Approval from PRSA by Beth Lowery StaffReporter The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) has approved Western Carolina University's application for a Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) charter. PRSSA, founded in 1968 by its parent organization, PRSA, is one of the few nationwide, student-managed pre-professional organizations. PRSSA membership gives students the opportunity to network with public relations professionals. The society encourages students to adhere to the highest ideals and principles of public relations practice. PRSSA membership will benefit all majors. Members will have access to an internship program and be eligible to attend national PRSSA conferences. Members also receive advice on resume writing and job searches and will receive informative newsletters about public relations issues. Once PRSSA members graduate from college, they automatically qualify for membership in PRSA at a reduced rate. PRSSA leadership consists of four executive officers, 12 district directors, a national newsletter editor and national conference coordinator. Approval of When asked about the overall outcome of the meeting, Laverty stated, "There were less people in attendance than I would have liked, but the students that were there were very involved and interested in the meeting." After the meeting ended at 9 p.m., Laverty and Bryant went on the air to do a call-in broadcast on WWCU FM. They discussed issues relevant to WCU students and received many positive responses from callers. WCU's PRSSA charter was announced October 30, at the National PRSSA convention in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Betty Fanner, assistant professor of Public Relations in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, attended the conference along with two public relations students. Currently there are 189 campus-based chapters nationwide, with a total student membership of more than 5,000. WCU is the 190th chapter. PRSSA will have a combined meeting with Catamount Communications, WCU's student-run public relations agency on Monday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in Stillwell 116. Officer elections for PRSSA will also take place at this meeting. PR students and faculty are planning a PR Day on Monday, November 20 to commemorate the approval of WCU's PRSSA charter. National and district PRSSA and PRSA leaders will be involved in the program. Anyone interested in PRSSA should contact Dr. Farmer at 227-7491 or come by Stillwell 123.
