  • 20 Western Carolinian October 19,1995 Sports Eagles IPcimip Cver Western. by Jason Queen Associate Editor Georgia Southern rolled up 355 yards rushing and 507 yards of total offense, en route to a 42-0 shellacking of WCU's football team, October 30th, in Statesboro. Western could manage only 194 yards of offense and 10 first downs in being shut out for the first time in over a decade. The two teams scrapped back and forth through the first quarter as neither team could manage a score. WCU actually outgained the Eagles in the opening stanza, 60-54. Chad Greene was a perfect 3-3 passing for 39 yards, and it looked as though this would be a pretty good battle. But on their second drive of the second quarter, Dexter Dawson plunged <» <» into the endzone from one yard out to give GSU a 7-0 lead. Eagle quarterback Kenny Robinson scored from a yard out on their next possession to make it 14-0 at the half. WCU actually dodged a bullet in the second quarter. Eagle kicker Eric Meng missed a 31- yard field goal on their first play of the quarter. He then botched a 35- yarder with five seconds left in the half to keep their lead at 14. The missed field goals turned out to be pointless, though. Georgia Southern scored touchdowns on four of their five possessions in the second half to cruise to the easy victory. NOTES: Western finished the game with 98 yards rushing on 40 carries. They attempted only 14 passes on the day. David Patten caught 5 passes for 62 yards. Where's the Offense? WCU has been outscored 101-10 the last 10 quarters. Photo by Terry K. Roberts hem _=_x^ POWER. 9IJS CONDUCTING A STUDENT SURVEY TO 1EARN WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC YOU WANT TO HEAR.. THIS IS YOUR. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME: IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMNENTS CALL PROGRAM DIRECTOR PHILLIP DRUM AT 227-7173. by Jason Queen Associate Editor The paint on the Marshall cheerleaders' van read, "Forecast for Cullowhee: 100% Thunder." That forecast was right on as the Thundering Herd smashed the Cats 42- 3 in Cullowhee last Saturday. The loss dropped WCU to 1-3 in the Southern Conference and 2-4 overall. The first two minutes of the game told the story of this game. WCU's Ken Hinsley booted the opening kickoff out of bounds to give Marshall possession at the 35-yard line. Running back Chris Parker carried three times for 65 yards, and Marshall led 7-0. Marshall's Chris Hanson shanked a punt 7 yards on their second possession to give Western possession at the Marshall 30 yard line. After three plays netted only six yards Hinsley boomed a 41-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3. But on the Herd's next possession, Parker found a seam again and sprinted around the right side for a 60-yard jaunt to paydirt. It was all Marshall from there, as the Herd tacked on two more touchdowns to make it 28- 3 at the half. They scored two more touchdowns for good measure in the fourth quarter for the final margin. NOTES: Western finished with only 122 yards of total offense. Four quarterbacks combined to complete six of 22 passes for 44 yards and two interceptions. The ground game was equally embarrassing as it amassed a mere 78 yards on 39 attempts. Defensive lineman Derek Summerour was the lone bright spot for the Cats, as he recorded four sacks on the day. WCU's next game is Saturday at UT-Chattanooga at 3:30. The game will be shown on SportSouth.
