  • Western Carolinian September 14,1995 Highland Hiker's Tour de Cashiers by Jessica Devaney Staff Reporter News Attention bikers! The Highland Hiker is holding the third annual Tour de Cashiers this weekend. Registrations will be Saturday morning at 7:30 am. The 52 mile ride will begin at 8:30 am featuring 5,000 feet of climbing and a 12 - mile fun-ride. The course provides test stops along the way and massage tents for those who experience difficulty. After the ride, participants are invited to enjoy food and music courtesy of the Highland Hiker Association. Anyone interested should arrive at the Highland Hiker, located at the intersection of highways 64 and 107. Riders should bring a bike and a helmet. Entry fee is $17. T&S Hardwoods Provides Scholarships to 5 WCU Students Five students from Western North Carolina are continuing their education this fall at Western Carolina University, thanks to a gift to the university from T&S Hardwoods Inc. of Sylva. The company recently pledged $5,000 to the Development Foundation of WCU Inc. to provide for five $1,000 merit-based scholarships to be awarded to deserving students from WNC. Plans are to continue the scholarships on an annual basis. "We are pleased to be able to use the forestry resources of Western North Carolina to support students from this region," said Tom Stanley, division manager of T&S Hardwoods in Sylva. "As members of the timber industry, we felt a need to enter into a partnership with the university to promote the educational and economic development of the region." T&S Hardwood Scholarships are available to WCU students who are graduates of high schools in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Swain and Transylvania counties. Contact: News Editor at 227-7267 Public Safety Highlights* •9/2 Officers cited a student for lack of operators' license after stopping the vehicle for a traffic violation warning at 12:35 am. •Officers cited a student for exceeding a safe speed at 1:23 am on Centennial Drive. •A student reported that a license plate was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked in the Walker A Lot between 1:30 pm and 2:45 pm . •A student reported that two hubcaps were stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in the Walker A Lot between 8/28 and 9/2. •Officers cited a student for driving the wrong way on a one-way street near Helder at 2:54 am . •9/3 Officers found a stop sign pulled from the ground at Camp Lab Road and Centennial Drive at 2:50 am . •Officers found a one-way street sign bent and two new residence hall signs vandalized at 4:04 am . •A walker reported suspicious circumstances in the Walker A Lot at 9:11 am. •Officers assisted a Marriott employee who was locked out of the building at 5 am . •Officers warned a male non-student about relieving himself under the bridge going into the Walker A Lot at 10:00 am . •9/4 Officers cited a student for reckless driving at 12:55 am. •Officers cited a student for exceeding a safe speed at 1:26 am. •Officers found a vehicle with the trunk open at 5:40 pm. The owner was contacted and found nothing missing. •A staff member reported an incident of disorderly conduct on the cross-country track near the golf facility which occurred at 4:30 pm. •Officers obtained a warrant charging a student with assault in connection with an incident last week where the student swerved a vehicle toward the officer who was directing traffic. •A student reported that her vehicle was struck by a hit & run driver between 7:00 am and 7:35 am in front of Scott. •Officers conducted a free bicycle registration program in the University Center in connection with LMP's Bicycle Maintenance Program. •9/5 Officers cited a student for reckless driving on Centennial Drive at 8:50 pm. •Officers heard the fire alarm sounding at Reynolds at 9:00 pm. They found that the alarm was being tested. •Officers cited a student for a stop sign violation on Centennial Drive. •Officers cited a student for exceeding a safe speed at 12:57 am. Officers assisteda Physical Plant employee in removing a baby snake from the Camp Building at 12:02 pm. •Officers found two students consul ingbeerina parking lot and warned them about campus policy and state law regarding underage drinking and authorized places for consumption at 11:32 pm. •Officers assisted the Jackson County Sheriffs Department by checking on an alarm at the Cash Points machine at 12:50 am. •Officers jump-started two vehicles and unlocked one. •Officers investigated a traffic accident between Helder and Scott at 1:25 pm. •A student bicyclist and a student driver were involved in a dispute on NC 107.
