  • J^ ^Vestern Carolinian July 13,1995 Features Art of the Great Outdoors by Leila Garriss StaffReporter "It looks like Gumby." "That's just a weird table," a group of orientation students from Gastonia said, "they're creative and abstract, and they add to the environment." Jonathan Patty, a senior in Electronics Engineering Technology, adds, "They're a piece of conversation," and they make you "start asking questions." Currently, there are several sculptures around campus. "Picnic," in front of Dodson, presents a common outdoor object in a new way. Viewers are invited to interact with it... within reason, of course. The orientation students said they "want to eat on it" and that they like its location. "The Witnesses," in Alumni Park next to Dodson, "is a simple exercise in form." The artist interprets it as a "three-legged being with six heads that guard[s] the others by always looking in every direction, kind of back to back soldiers." Beside Coulter is "Portal," "a celebra tion of nature.... work[ing] with the inherent shapes of the individual pieces of wood and stone." Located near the Center for Independent Mountain Living (CIML), "Classical Spirit" "depends on gesture, light and shade to give it a feeling of movement," due to its stationary position. On July 18, a new sculpture, Running Man, will be installed in the courtyard near the library. This is the last new sculpture that will come to campus this year. Art for the sake of art seems to get lost when money enters the picture. Students' concerns focus on the source of funding and its distribution. $1,000 is paid to each artist, which also covers expenses related to installing the sculpture. According to Tim Jacobs, Director of the U.C., other schools, such as Appalachian, have similar programs but allocate more money for the program. Specifically, funding for WCU's Outdoor Sculpture Program originates "from academic support similar to programs that support visiting scholars,"stated Continued on page 7 A Great Way to Start Your Day 293-3785 Monday- $^9 Wednesday Rentals Thursday __ ■..._..__« " liam-iopm /f5^^ BMiriVUtu KM* Friday- Saturday llam-llpm Sunday 4pm- 9pm Located in Cullowhee Between GJ's & El Gatos on Old 107
