  • Western Carolinian February 2, 1995 Sports 12ns Top ospects Will Sullivan Associate Editor Western landed two of the state's top >layers yesterday, the first day of the igning period for football recruits. Boo lobinson, an offensive lineman, and defensive back DeNorrise Burton head a bumper crop of recruits who signed national letters of intent to become Catamounts next year. Both Robinson and Burton were teammates last year at Asheville High School. The 6'2, 270-pound Robinson was a two-time all-state selection at Asheville High. He played in the Shrine Bowl this past December, an all-star game featuring the top seniors in North and South Carolina. Robinson started all four years in high school, and as a junior was the only non-senior named to the Associated Press' All-State team. He was named to the All-Mountain Athletic Conference team at offensive and defensive line the past three seasons. "I feel good about (committing to WCU)," said Robinson. "Their honesty was the main thing that attracted me." Burton, 5'10 and 168 pounds, was both a defensive back and quarterback for Asheville High. He had 53 combined tackles and six interceptions and threw for 1,054 yards and 11 touchdowns last year on his way to becoming an All-Mountain Athletic Conference selection. Burton is expected to only play defensive back at Western. "That's the position I really wanted to play," Burton said. "Playing two positions, I was tired a lot. I'll now be able to play just one." NOTES: Information concerning Western's other football recruits was not available at press time. That information will be included in next week's edition of the Western Carolinian. Lady Cats Whip Winthrop; Fall to Ga. Southern Rick Husak Staff Reporter The Lady Cats showed elegance and poise last Wednesday as they hosted the visiting Eagles. The Cats bounced back from a four game skid, coming up big in a 96-68 victory against Winthrop. This was a must- win game for the Lady Cats as they tried to build some momentum. Although the Lady Cats are 6-11 overall and 1-6 conference, they are on pace to have their best season in years. One more conference win will assure them of their best conference record in five years. Missy Broy continues to lead the conference in assists, averaging 6.1 per game. She is also a leading candidate for Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. The Lady Cats had five people shooting in double digits against the Eagles with no one fouling out. The Cats lead at half time by a score of 41- 33, and turned the heat up even higher in the second half. The Lady Cats capitalized on Eagle turnovers (27 for the game), as they went on a 12-0 run to stay 16 points ahead with 9:53 left in the game. They slowly pulled away, lead by Alicia Brittain's 13 points and a career high 22 rebounds. Her 22 boards is the best by any Southern Conference player this season and third highest in school history. The Lady Cats played a complete game as they shot 42% from the field and 80% (24 of 30) from the free throw line. Notes: Double digit shooting for the Cats were Jennifer Adams (17 points), Pam Owens (16 points), Alicia Brittain (13 points), Karen Mason (12 points) and Missy Broy (12 points). The Lady Cats, trying to put together a two-game win streak, travelled to Georgia Southern to take on the defending Southern Conference champions. GSU jumped out to a quick 22-3 lead to start the game and never Lady Cats continued on page 18 OFFICIAL RING EVENT! lifetime warranty fast delivery Feb. 6th and 7th Monday and Tuesday only 11 am to 4 pm WCU Bookstore /IRTC7IRVED ■ $20 deposit
